Visit from North Cyprus to South (?)

Postby Lazy3000 » Sat Apr 16, 2005 2:29 pm

Hi all!

Have 1 question, if someone can help me on that:

Friends of mine (couple) from Germany are going to their holidays in June 2005 to Antaliya (Turkey), and they would like to take a trip to North Cyprus from there - they have been told that there is a Catamaran Cruises.

Here is a question: will they be allowed to cross to South Cyprus from North for 1 or 2 days?

Thank you in advance for our answers!

Hi Lazy

The answer is yes they will be allowed to cross from the North to the South, without any restriction (except for how many cigarettes they take with them from North to South?)

Thank you, and one more to ask (?)

To erolz: Thank you for your reply!

And one more to ask: If they decide to stay here for a longer, let's say for 2-3 weeks, do they have to register, for example, at Immigration Office, or whatever?

The reason, is that I am not a EU Citizen, so every year have to go through the formalities, and do not now what applies to EU-Citizens.

Thanks in advance!!!

I am not sure where you mean by here ? :)

As a tourist you are allowed to stay upto 3 months In North Cyprus and do not have to register. As to the South, I do not really know but would suspect that as EU citizrns they can come and og as they please without having to reigister anywhere - but might be wrong.

Hope that helps

I am not sure 100% but unfortunately my friend you will not be able to enter the Cyprus Republic from the north because u will be entering Cyprus from an illegal port. Even if you come from EU you have to enter Cyprus for an international recognized airport or port. So the best thing you can do, is either enter Cyprus from Larnaca or Paphos airports, or by Limassol or Larnaca ports, or ask the Cyprus embassy in your country to clear things for you by giving you more information.
If you are still entering Cyprus from Turkey then you will probably not be able to visit RoC

Hi Tamara

With respect, you are mistaken here. I personaly have entred the South having arrived in Cyprus via the North as both an EU citizen and as a TC citizen (Ihold dual nationality). I also personally know many EU citizens that have done likewise as has my partner who is a New Zealand national.

Also here are some Cyprus Mail articles relating to this issue

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.ph ... &archive=1

I quote some relevant parts of this article

In his five-page decision, Judge Giasemis Giasemi noted that the charges had been filed based on article 12(1) of the Aliens and Immigration Law, which stipulates that no person may enter or exit the Republic through an illegal point of entry.

However, as Giasemi pointed out, the government had agreed to implement the European Union’s Green Line Regulation on the movement of goods and people, which, after considering the government’s concerns, stressed that “it was necessary to give the right to EU citizens to exercise the right of free movement within the EU”.

The Regulation took effect immediately after the island’s accession to the EU on May 1.
The responsibility to apply the rules in relation to the Regulation was undertaken by the Republic, which drafted a code stipulating, among other things, that “EU citizens can cross the line to and from the areas not controlled by the government, irrespective of the point of entry,” the judge said.
Giasemi pointed out that the Green Line Regulation did not cancel article 12(1), but added that the code effectively did exactly that.

“The code and the government’s stance on the matter clearly take the position that EU citizens, including Cypriot citizens, are not criminally prosecuted when entering and exiting the territory of the Republic from a non-approved port in violation of article 12(1).

“In relation to these offences, they enjoy immunity,” the court decision said.

Even non EU citizens are treated the same - see here.

No Problem at all. It was not my intent to offend anyone - just to try and provide as accurate an answer to the posters question as possible.

Australians crossing north to south???

Postby staka » Sat Apr 30, 2005 12:12 pm

Hi!

My partner and İ are coming from Turkey by ferry and need to get to Limassol to get a boat to Egypt. From what İ have read so far it seems that its possible for us to cross as we don't need a vısa for Cyprus an the current changes are allowing people to cross but İ was hoping İ could get a confirmation from somebody that its ok.

Also a little problem is that we can't find a guide for Cyprus in English here in Turkey, so İ was wondering if you had any advice as to where İ can find info in getting around... i.e. getting from Girne to Limassol. İ know we have to pass through Nicosia... İs the bus system thorough and reliable ..etc.

looking forward to responses
cheers
