Mines cleaning started at Leadra

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby bill cobbett » Thu Mar 27, 2008 1:51 am

I still don't understand. If I want to stroll into the northern end of Ledra, have a look around for a few minutes and then come back out south will I have to show a passport and get a visa card going northwards and then show a passport going back into the RoC?

If this is the case and looking at the posts above it seems to be, then what's all the fuss been about other than opening a barrier that's been closed since 63/64?

Oh God knows Bill... just wait a few weeks and we'll all find out. I dread to think of the congestion it'll most likely cause in Ledras...

UN COMPLETES INSPECTIONS FOR THE OPENING OF A GATE AT LOKMACI (LEADRA STREET).

The United Nations has announced that it’s completed a safety check in the area between Lokmacı Barricade and Ledra Street to make sure that it is cleared of all mines and booby traps before the opening of a new crossing point in the heart of the capital.

In a statement, the United Nations Development Programme “Partnership for the Future -- Mine Action Centre” said that a six-person mine action team carried out the search, with support from UNFICYP, during which no dangerous items were found.

The check for unexploded ordnance was necessary prior to the start of work to secure buildings for the opening of the crossing point.

Earlier, UNFICYP Spokesman Jose Diaz said the two respective municipalities in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) would start restoring dilapidated buildings in their own areas along the route following the completion of the mine sweep by UN experts.

The move comes just days after the two leaders in Cyprus agreed to open a gate at the point known as Lokmacı Barricade in Nicosia, as soon as technically possible.(?????)

I am sure last year I read something that alll of Cyprus was demined and that the UN congratulate the efforts for those who were involved in doing so. I wish I was there for the fall of the baricate, man that would be awsome. I remember seeing the news when the Berlin wall came down and people cheering their heads off. NO cheers for us unfortunately :(

Everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that only a controlled checkpoint will be opened on Ledra Street...
Whats the resemblence with the fall of Berlin wall??

It's a cliche, I know, but even the longest journey starts with a single step. That one will be able to cross in the middle of the old city for the first time since the early/mid 1960s is, surely, a good thing. Better than not being able to cross at all, better than living behind barricades; but not as good as complete dissolution of the border, nor as good as removing passport & visa control. They'll be the next thing to demand.

You can see the TRNC Police cabins where you will show you passport or ID card in the bottom pictures. The same as all the other crossings. Now I also think GC Police will check passports and ID's on way back which is the case now. In addition there will be customs officers on both sides.

Have you got your "TRNC" passport ready to show the RoC?
