Giving up smoking

Postby markwoods39 » Mon Mar 24, 2008 7:58 pm

Hi want some advice, i am giving up smoking as from 1st April. Has any of you done this, did you find it hard, was it easy for you. I gave up 3yrs ago for 1 yr but i went back on them :(

The funny thing was for me, i never missed them at all until my accident, then that day on i started to smoke again. It was a very bad accident, and i was in hospital for 4 weeks, and the first thing i brought was a packet of cig when i left the hospital.

Today i went without a cig for 5hrs but found it very very hard to do, nothing like the first attempt. Is it all mind over matter???? do you think

How did you give up and why did you give up. And the people who never smoked who reading this post, please tell me what you think about people smoking ,how does it affect you.

It is mind over matter....You don't NEED to smoke...you just think you do.
I had given up smoking for fifteen years then something terrible happened and next thing i know,i had started smoking again...smoked for another year or so until six months ago when one Monday morning i said to myself "i wont smoke again" and i haven't since then...
Only side effect was gaining some kilos weight which i am in the process of getting rid of now..
Go for it...you can do it...the hardest is the first few days...after that, you'll feel much better.

Sorry to hear about your accident mark, but that is no excuse for smoking!!

We gave up 7 or 8 years ago and no it is not easy as you already know. You just have to take it one day at a time and just think about all the positives such as your health, no acrid smells - clean house and clothes, no having to go outside in the cold rain or snow, your wealth! Why not buy something after your first week as a non-smoker with the money you have saved. Aim for something that you really want but maybe cannot afford now - after one week of non-smoking I bet you will be able to (unless you are OTT!)

Hope this helps :) Good luck :)

Roasted chickpeas/salted roasted chick peas. (Leblebi in Turkish, in Greek = I dont know)

You put a handful in your pocket and verytime you have the urge, throw some into your mouth. It will take your mind off smoking for a while. Thats how my grandfather stopped smoking. Its a matter of 'displacement ' action. You have to do something with your hands. I wonder if a rosary would be beneficial? Good luck. Filthy habit btw.

Giving up smoking is easy - I've done it loads of times.

Seriously though, avoid places and situations where you are likely to see people smoking (much easier now there is a ban in pubs etc). Avoid friends who smoke - at least at the begining. Don't forget the NHS is running a stop smoking help thingy, might be worth contacting them

I have been stopped now for over 3yrs and am also a qualified smoking cessation advisor.

Do not try and do it without NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) or patches in simple terms. Use them and keep using them as the instructions tell you to. You are far more likely to stay quitted with help. I would also recommend nicotine gum/lozenges to take the edge off the worst of the cravings, when in the pub, after a meal, when driving - whichever gets you worst.

Patches aren't cheap, but they are less than cigarettes and they won't kill you. Believe me, stopping smoking will change your life for the better.

I haven't yet but telling myself everyday that I have to, don;t know, maybe until I die or smth.

I've quited for 2-3 months a few times but started again 'cause I was to bored of this life.

When I have too much time, I have nothing to do, when I have no time I am full with things to do. I cannot understand this.
