Tips on fishing?

Postby Talisker » Sun Mar 23, 2008 11:08 am

My attempts at fishing fail miserably in Cyprus - tried different baits (flour/water paste, bread, this commercial paste you make from a packet purchased from a fishing shop}. Don't want to do anything fancy - just to fish off the harbour wall, like the locals do, and catch a few fish. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks for your ideas.

I can't imagine why fish would want to hang around the harbour wall. Go to where the rocks/boulders are at night and you can easily catch urchins, crabs, and shrimps.

I wanted to catch fish not crustaceans. Harbour walls, jetties (and rocks/boulders) are used, seemingly successfully, by the locals for fishing. However, will try your night time suggestion. Thanks.

That sounds useful - I'll definitely try that. Thanks.

Actually, we bought some fishing gear on the Isle of Mull in Scotland once, and asked what would be appropriate bait for fishing from the quayside. The lady disappeared into the back of the shop and returned with two fresh mackerel. She advised us to cut into strips and use as bait. We followed her advice assiduously, fished for a couple of hours, caught nothing. Net result of our fishing - minus two fish! We should have just taken the bait home and cooked the mackerel!

I have the same problem, I am a useless fisherman. Inquiries to the local folk, many of them kids, who fish succesfully about bait and gear have shown that you must use the smallest hook and a variety of bait. Once on Hydra island the local kids brought out lots of fish using ground meat as bait. Not so strange when you consider that the most edible fish are carnivorous.

Yes, for fishing in Cyprus you need Souvla as bait or Souvlaki for smaller species…
