Planning on moving to Cyprus

Postby Rozz » Sun Mar 23, 2008 2:27 am

Hi Everybody: I have in mind to move to Cyprus. I am presently living in Belize, the Island of San Pedro to be exact. It's the pits here. I know nothing about Cypress and this is where I need good solid help and advice. I'm no spring chicken. I'm a Pensioner and widow. I am looking for a 2-bedroomed unfurnished apartment. The second bedroom can be small as I only want to use it as my computer room. I'd like to be in either Limassol or Larnaca. Never been to Cyprus, so I am very green about the country. The apartment should not ask for an excessive rent (am I expecting too much? LOL). I'd also appreciate finding an apartment close to town and beach. There will not be a car any more in my lifetime so local transport (buses) is important. Perhaps other pertinent information such as the costs of electricity; water; telephone; Internet and anything else one has to pay extra for could be included in any replies to this mail. Last but not least..... is there a Mosquito problem and do you have excessive humidity? I haven't been to GB in nearly 30 years so I can only compare the cost of living in Cyprus with either Switzerland or South Africa where I have spent most of my life. Thank you very much for any replies. Cheers! Rozz.

For the time being I'll answer two of your questions

Mosquitoes ~ yes lots especially near fresh / stagnant water sources

Humidity ~ Oh yes ~ up to 95% in some area's during the mid summer months ~ it can be awful when it hits 40c and high humidity.

But the main thing I would like to say is that I find it very strange anyone moving to Cyprus without actually visiting the island first ~ I know it's a long way for you but it's a hell of a gamble wanting to live here without seeing for yourself what it's like.

Thank you Bill for your reply. I had never been to Switzerland yet I lasted nearly 30 years there. Met and married my late husband who died at a vey young age. I remained in Switzerland for a further 8 years after he passed on. Although I had never been to Africa except for a vacation in Kenya, I packed up, shipped my entire home out to Cape Town, South Africa where I lived blissfully for 22 years. Got scared when the government changed hands and things got very scary for the whites.... so I moved. It was hard for me as I loved S.A. I then shipped my entire household out to Belize which was the biggest blunder I ever made. This is a nightmare living here in this absolutely filthy, stinking country. It's grease money all the way. You either grease or forget it. Hope you can follow me. Heat does not bother me, but I'm a dead duck in humidity so I may have to forget it, and see where next to run to. Thanks a million for your answer thus far. All the best. Rozz. p.s.- I have three nationalities: GB; Swiss; S.A. Would go back to S.A. where I lived like a Queen on my Pension but things are extremely bad now. Crime worsens by the day. And because of the crime the Prrsident is considering cancelling the Olympic Games to be held in S.A. 2010. I lost EVERYTHING coming here. My entifre household (smashed to ribbons plus theft) and my life's money simply disappeared. I am attempting to write a book about this place. First I have to get out of this trap. Hope I haven't bored you.

Hi, Rozz. I too picked up and moved to Israel many years ago without having first made a visit. It worked out well for decades until my husband died. Last September I moved to Gdynia, Poland...quite a radical change, but I'm enjoying it.

While I know nothing about the cost of living, etc., in Cyprus, I have visited the country several times, first due to its close proximity to Israel, and then because it fascinated me. It's a wonderful place with far more to it than the tourist stretches.

Wishing you a rapid exit from the benighted Belize and better days ahead in beautiful Cyprus.

Linichka: Thanks for your reply. Glad you are happy in Poland. I too have been to Israel, the first time at aged 56 I went to a Kibbutz and loved it. The second 2years later to a home in Jerusalem caring for both arab and Isrsaeli (badly, very badly) handicapped children. There's a write-up about my Kibbutz (lovely) fiasco in a Travel Book. 32 is the age liimit and I shoutedy my neck out because I was already 56. What the hell, it was great. The second time round I had no problems getting in to the children's home. Travelled all over hitch-hiking and never had a problem. I loved it. :)

Can I ask why are you planning to move to a place you have never visited before?
