It takes a lot of maturity to trust. Are you big enough to let go of the past and move forward for a better future for your kids.
Fortunately, the younger generations of today are very mature, and I doubt that they will make the same mistakes of the past. It is time to move forward.
It is also not a question of minority versus majority. The 2 communities can intgrate to form one strong nation called Cyprus with only Cypriot citizens. We must remember that the year is 2008, and diversity is a good thing. In Australia (a very diverse nation) Greeks and Turks live together. Not one bit of violence. Many are even friends. This is the proof. No one wants war and pain. We all want bright futures, prosperity and our health.
I think the young generation dont give a shit about reunification, half of them dont even have a clue of whats going on, they are more interested in a high standard of living supplied to them by their parents and the opposite sex.
As for trust I agree it is the key, becuase there is no trust we demand structures to provide what is naturally found in other countries. But our experiencies tell us that GCs do not have our best interests at heart and being the numerical larger community they will swamp the country leaving us at their mercy. Will you fight for my child when he is discriminated against, when the government organs are run by GCs? but the underlying tones maybe discriminaiton which can be dressed to look like democracy, where will the GCs be then while I am fight for my rights in the corridors of the ECHR???
Viewpoint,
I understand your point of view. However, Cyprus is now a member of the EU and the principles that the EU are founded are of equal opportunity for all in a democratic society, free movement and a free market. If a solution is founded, and I really hope it is, then all citizens rights can and should be protected constitutionally. Mechanisms should be put in place where TCs can enjoy employment in Cyprus' high offices of the public service, employment within the defence forces and police etc etc. TCs should also be protected and assisted in opening their own ventures if they so desire. Some ventures can also be done jointly with GCs.
I do not believe that GCs will want to swamp the TCs. I beleive GCs and TCs would be more interested in nation building and creating a good standard of living.
If your child is discriminated against, then yes, I will join you in your fight for justice and I beleive that most GCs will do the same. And a portion of Cyprus' organs as stated above will also be TC as they must be inducted into public service departments, military and police positions etc.
