Hello

Does anyone have contact details for Turtle conservation / Turtle watch ... anyone connected with Turtle protection here in Cyprus.

I specifically need contact details of anyone in Paphos / Polis area ... but any contact details would be greatly appreciated and I will take it from there ...

Many thanks ...

Hopefully one of the numbers below will be of assistance

Turtle Watch
British Forces Cyprus has three Turtle Watch groups in Akrotiri, Dhekelia and Episkopi. They consist of groups of volunteers who work together to protect the Green and Loggerhead turtles that nest in Cyprus. Volunteers monitor nesting adults, remove their tracks, protect the nest area through its incubation period and estimate its hatching date. A cage is placed over the nest to protect them from predators such as dogs, foxes and humans. The nests are watched and the cage is lifted so that the turtles can go naturally towards the sea.

Families are invited to watch the excavations of the hatchlings and dates will be advertised. It is an experience enjoyed by adults and children alike. If you would like to volunteer contact:
Akrotiri Co-ordinator Sgt Clive Burt 00357 99997662
Episkopi Co-ordinator Mrs Linda Stokes 00357 99347296
Dhekelia Co-ordinator Mrs Fiona Martin 00357 99024920

The photos are mostly for the authorities, but if I can get my new computer set-up here to go from camera to document, then there might be something ...

I'll certainly let you know how things go as it is a deeply sensitive turtle conservation area ... and I am involved now, a little sooner than I'd hoped as I have not finished with my other projects yet.

But your contact details helped guide me .... so thanks again. :)

Hope it works out..

Here is a Dept of fisheries story from two years ago.Ladies mile beach.Diesel and rubbish been washed up on the beach for two days.It is the end of August and the place is packed. The local Taverna owner at the bottom of the beach calls the Dept of Fisheries who turns up a day later.
He takes photo's and pinpoints the problem immediately. Two large yachts anchored 200 meters off shore. There is a trail of diesel coming from one and they seem to be emptying there day to day rubbish in the sea.
The taverna owner says sought it out and stop the mess these people are creating.Time passes and he eventually manages to get out to the yachts, after a brief discussion he returns and tells the taverna owner it will be ok,they are leaving tomorrow.
She then get's very angry and shouts about polution and they should be arrested,at this point a large crowd has gathered and they demand action. The ministry man then explains the yacht belongs to a well known Cypriot no name just well known, and he leaves..
The taverna owner is outraged and starts swearing,an English guy steps forward and says he is from the base and will sought out the problem.10 minutes later two black assualt speed boats arrive, manned by Marines dressed in black, they board the yachts and take away 6 people.Five minutes later the yachts are taken away..
I never witnessed this but was told by a Cypriot friend.

Morale of the story, don't rely on Dept of Fisheries, call the Royal Marines.
