A place is more than a physical location. It is the location and the people, you are right. I often wonder what Famagusta will be like if and when the people go back. I remember Bir's visit to Istinco, when he faced a derelict village, with not a single person there and I can empathise. I want to walk around Famagusta at least once again, but I fear that it will be like talking with ghosts.

Famagusta is a different kettle of fish. The almost perfect city wall were my usual haunts. I would walk on those walls for hours and feel the history of the place. Even including Shakespearean Othello (fiction of course).

With Varosha, it would be a different story. If and when the legal owners are given the go ahead, it will be their children and seemingly with no ties. The only people with memories will be the old codgers like me.

Talking about the history of the places, I was dismayed at the re-naming of old Cypriot villages with Turkish names. Have you heard that there are moves to revert back to the old Cypriot names. To me that is good news but in a wider perspective its meaning must be far reaching. What does it mean for the furure. Is there something about to happen. I hope so as I can never learn the new names. Older ones with a history have more meaning. Is there anything in the Greek about the names?

I must admit that Kakopetria has a magic touch with its abundance of fresh cool waters and the bloosoming trees in spring Must not forget the rabbits in their hutches begging to jump in to the cooking pots.

Deniz,

Sener Levent referred to the reintroduction of the original village names in one of his OpEd pieces some time ago.

I do not know the situation in the north, but I would be willing to bet that place names are sort of used according to custom and habit, not according to official policy. So in every day use they probably use a mix of old and new names, especially for the bigger villages that were landmarks in Cyprus. Reverting to the original names, (not always Greek) would simply be recognising the realities of every day life.

I suppose you are right.

If my cousins talk about Kofunye/Kophinou I know they refer to Kophinou in the south. If they refer to its new name pre - 74, which is Gecitkale, I assume they are talking about the new village in the North. Endless confusion arises. As we often talk about the south we need constant reminding. Now, where is Lefkonico/Lefkonuk?

You cannot, IMHO, beat Phini for its great people and welcome.

I forgot about those pics!

We were there in the middle of the summer so it's not exactly as green and wet as it can get.
