Do you have a favourite Cypriot Village?

... OR

Have you found one that just has something special to make it worth visiting?

Hubby home Orph?!? You have been noticably quiet of late!

We live in town so we love driving out to the villages and mountains when the opportunity arises!
I am not sure of the names of all the villages we have visited but each has something that draws you back - like the ladies making their lace in Lefkara or the little old lady who beckons you into her 'museum house' in Omodhos!

I am also quite partial to the Polis and Latchi area as they always appear so serene. Maybe that is a bit too close though eh Orph? We could be 'near neighbours' heaven forbid!

Leave it be. But then where would we get our kicks from.

Careful and beware the wrath of Orph!

I fear not. Not the least she ignores my lovely village. Methinks I'm in the dog house. Again.

Considering the location, you are not really surprised are you?

I cant help that. But its where my heart is.

Maybe we could possibly visit it for you the next time we go over. Would that help?

Yep. Please do visit. Its just pass Kophinou and Menoyia on the Larnaca/Limassol road.

I went there last Easter and will be there again this summer. I wasnt saddened, just happy to be back where I would run around in the dusty roads. Its been Tarmacced since. Even got electricity. Thats progress for you.

One location that is my ultimate number one is Kourion Beach , reminds me so much of Alasia in Famagusta and yet they are not really similar .
I love Kourion and always visit and have fish lunch and wine at none other than Chris's Blue Beach !!
I will be there this coming Saturday 22nd March come rain or shine hoping to wet the baby's head , who hasn't showed up yet but hopefuly HE will do so by then !!

Stoumbi? Is that on the way to Polis/Latchi as I know the name but never visited

Seems like everyone goes to Chris's Blue Beach - we have had several meals there washed down with copious amounts of wine (NOT ME MILT! )

Hope you get here before your grandson does!

Yes , Stroumbi The Great is on the way to Polis , I was born there , an earthquake in 1953 destroyed the old village and a new one was built , subsequently many villagers returned to the old village and rebuild their houses so there are two villages in effect that is why I call it ( no one else does ) Stroumbi the Great .
There was a British base there way back in 1955 , although we did not like the English that much because of the on going liberation struggle , it was nevertheless a good time for the villagers financially. My father was the camp Tailor and that is when I first experienced the luxury of a chocolate bar out of a can !!
I always try and visit the village to pay my respects to my mothers' grave , she was killed in that earthquake. I was 7 years young !!

From 1956 - 59, I lived in Kophinou where there was an British army encampment. Thats where I experienced the Cheddar cheese out of the tin. With the chocolate digestive biscuits and the cheese, it added favourably to our diet. They also appreciated the fresh eggs we supplied them. That was the good bit. My grandmother often complained that patrols used to raid our house and loot the old game (old pin-ball )machines of their contents my grandad would have in his Cafe. They had to hide the old piastres in the bedposts so they wouldnt find any more money. They were supposed to be looking for guns. Such is a soldiers life.

Lemithou, ah yes, I know it well. Went there when the road from Prodromos was unpaved. Wonderful childhood holidays.

Omodos and Kedares too, at grape harvest time, with the smell of fermenting wine in the air.

Bellapaix, when it was still inhabited by its people. Yalousa, Davlos, Agios Andronikos. I will not go visit them, I want to keep the memories of them intact.

Kouris sounds good to visit, must go there next time I am in Cyprus.

Has anyone heard of a place called Potamiou, in the same area as Omodos? Spent two magical weeks there as a child, at my uncle's house who was teaching there and was a true Renaissance man, with so many interests beyond his profession.

I dont blame you Nikitas. Nothing like your own people living in their own houses. In Anglissidhes, most TC house were occupied by Sri Lankans. It made me feel odd too. At least they were invited in to care for the elderly.

Deniz,

A place is more than a physical location. It is the location and the people, you are right. I often wonder what Famagusta will be like if and when the people go back. I remember Bir's visit to Istinco, when he faced a derelict village, with not a single person there and I can empathise. I want to walk around Famagusta at least once again, but I fear that it will be like talking with ghosts.
