...and I thought the 'Mafia' was the Domain of Northern Cyp

Reading the Cyprus Mail today (see below), I am so disappointed that the 'Mafia' and or 'illegalities' exist in the RoC too. How disappointing. Those that live in glass houses........

Kidnapped in broad daylight
By Alexia Saoulli

A 60-YEAR-old Russian land developer was kidnapped by a gang of hooded men from his home outside Paphos in broad daylight yesterday.

By last night authorities were no closer to discovering who or why Viacheslav Shimkevich had been abducted without a trace.

Police said the kidnapping was reported by Shimkevich’s 37-year-old wife, Irena.

According to her statement, four men arrived at their two-storey home in Konia village at around 10am. The assailants, who spoke Russian, knocked her over and proceeded to handcuff and gag her. She told police the men were hooded, wore gloves and were clothed in black.

“Her face was then covered and she was put in one of the bedrooms upstairs,” police said.

“Two of the men stayed with her and two others went looking for her husband who was in the bathroom. They waited for him to come out and then they took him into the living room where they remained for three hours.”

Reports said the 37-year-old overheard the men arguing about money.

Shimkevich is said to be involved in the purchase and sale of land in Cyprus. Police said he had a Greek Cypriot business partner with whom investigators were due to talk to last night.

“Whether he was involved in anything dishonest or corrupt we do not know. His wife doesn’t know anything. He was a man who bought and sold land and worked with someone from here, who we plan to speak to,” police said.

At around 1pm, the four men bundled the 60-year-old into a grey Lexus with red number plates, leading police to believe the car was rented.

“They removed his wife’s handcuffs before leaving and she saw them take her husband. That’s when she called us,” police said.

Interpol, Europol and the Russian police have been contacted for assistance with the investigation.

Neighbours said the couple, who have two children, had been living at the Andrea Kyriakou Street residence for less than a year.

Socrates Vassiliades, 54, said the couple had kept to themselves and did nothing to raise any suspicions.

“I hardly saw the husband. I only caught a glimpse of him getting out of his car when he came home one afternoon,” he said.

“I met his wife a few times and found her to be very nice. The little I knew of her she seemed very likeable and friendly.”

The 54-year-old said the incident had shocked residents, as this was a first for the quiet village of around 3,000 inhabitants.

“I’ve had my car broken into a few times recently but we’ve never had anything like this before. It’s alarming. My four grandchildren are at home with me and it makes you worry about them.”

He said the older of the children had already been asking him why their street had been swarming with police and yellow tape all afternoon.

“We didn’t of course tell them anything because we don’t want to frighten them.”
Vassiliades said he had been at home all morning but that that he had not seen or heard anything.

“It was obviously the work of professionals because I didn’t notice anything until the police showed up and they started putting up the tape.”

The 54-year-old said the incident was yet another example of how things had changed.

“In the past we would have known everything about our neighbours and would have been very close knit. But in the last 10 years the village has grown at an excessively rapid rate and people no longer know each other the way they did. A lot of foreigners have moved into the area and relationships are a little more distant due to the difference in cultures.”

He added: “It’s a shame. People don’t even know their neighbours any more nor have any particular involvement with them. This [incident] just goes to show you never really know your neighbour and your imagination just thinks the worst.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Paphos CID, the nearest police station or the citizen’s helpline on 1460.

Goodmorning Deniz, Don't you know Southern Cyprus is very popular for the Russian Mafia and laundering money ?

examples :
hELLO, ME AGAIN

A friend of mine has a daughter who is going to come over to Paphos to work in her friend's restaurant/bar.

There seem to have been many obstacles as to why she has not yet gone over the latest being that the owner of this restaurant says he is having to pay money to the Russian Mafia in Paphos just to open up.

This is obviously worrying and upsetting for my friend and i said i would try to find out if this is a "white one" or reality.

Any info would be greatly appreciated as a matter of urgency please.

Ta very much

"Russia's money trail," is very informative and revealing. During a recent hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on European affairs, Marshall Goldman, director of the Russian Research Center at Harvard University, revealed that the International Monetary Fund money given to Russia "ended up maybe not in Swiss banks but in Cypress banks." More than 5,000 registered Russian offshore companies operate out of Southern Cyprus with the support and blessing of the Greek Cypriot administration, some of which are ...

Money laudering regulations now stipulate 14 years imprisonement for anyone committing maoney laundering and 7 years for anyone found to be covering someone else up.

It would be difficult to do this in the north as you would require a banking system in order to carry this out. 2 mates in a kiosk exchanging cash is not really recognised in the western world as banking.

There is a mafia presence in southern Cyprus, not on a huge scale but it does exist.
I have heard very little in regards to it been still in the confines of the Russians, but I suppose there are still a few sleaze bags still on the island.
Prostitution still survives on the backs of old eastern block women, illegall immigration still exists around the coasts, and I suppose if you have a grudge with a competitor a few hundred Euros still buy a big ugly bruiser.

Pull yourself together man!

However, your feigned attempt at concern, so that you can post something denigrating whilst not losing your "reputation" as a good old Cypriot would have worked, if you had resisted that final comment ....

Naell, yes you are quiet right, the UK also has it's shady characters. The question however was regarding Southern Cyprus.I remember the heddy days of five years ago when a Russians suitcase was full of money and no underpants.
I remember the chartered planes at Larnaca airport, deporting Russians,I remember the get very rich, very quickly estate agents, also car dealers, shop owners. The cash was there so they took it,as we do in the UK.
The point is it happened and still happens albeit on a smaller scale, thanks to the more respectable in the Cypriot Government.

You are closer to the truth than you think. According to a friend who is a banker, money laundering in TRNC happens, as it does everywhere else in the world, but it is on a minor scale because of TRNC not being on the world's electronic banking system.

RoC probably still launders more money - not through any greater criminality, but just because more money is swilling around and its easier to hide dirty money in a big pile than it is in a small pile. The biggest money laundering is carried out through London (according to him) because more money rushes through there than anywhere else.

The main instrument of money laundering, offshore companies with nominee shareholders, were abolished in the RoC since 2002 or 2003. Now all shareholders must be known, corporate tax is 10 per cent and there must be an allocation of profits after the first year and that allocation is taxed at the normal income tax rates.

As for Russian and other Mafias, the world is full of them. They have even given Hollywood a chance to capitalise on the phenomenon in umpteen movies. Cyprus could not be the exception.

Russian Mafia? i could do this to someone who owned me money...relax, jeeez... :D

in Cyprus instead of kidnapping they burn cars or put pipe bombs, don't forget... Russians have slighly different methods which is kidnapping etc.

Please stop this nonsense now... its funny to read, this topic is already being discussed in Russian forum in JOKES section.
