The Cyprus Bar Association is the body responsible for regulating lawyers in Cyprus. They are suppose to do this by enforcing their code of conduct. It seems from the number of complaints that are flying about that they are failing to regulate the profession. Lets take for example the "conflict of interest" paragraph of the code. This is supposed to preclude a lawyer from acting for you if he or she is acting, let us say for the other side as well, or has an advantage to gain by acting for you (other than his fee).
So if the lawyer is working on behalf of a construction company he can not take on a client who wants to buy a flat from the said company. In other words independent legal advice is called for.
Conflict of interest does not translate very well in to Greek and some lawyer view such conflict as an opportunity. But why does the Bar Association allow this kind of behaviour to continue? Should they continue to have this regulatory/disciplinary role?
