Istanbul was the right choice, from a latin root name (Constantine is Latin not Greek) they went to a full Greek derived name "Is tin Poli"- say it fast enough and it becomes Istanbul.

But seriously, the changing of names in Cyprus is one big mystery. The TCs knew what names they used in every day speech to indicate Yalousa, Ayio Andronikos and other places. The changes must have confused them too. The closest experience I can find in the Gc repertoire is those teachers they sent from Greece in the early 60s to Hellenise the language. That went over the side soon enough, I guess we know who we are, no need for lessons.
