GERMAN MP CLAUDIA ROTH HOLDS CONTACTS WITH TRNC OFFICIALS.The Co-Chairperson of the German Greens Party and member of the German Parliament Claudia Roth is having contacts in the TRNC as guest of the Speaker of the Parliament Fatma Ekenoglu.

Ms Roth, who arrived in the TRNC from the Ercan Airport on Monday together with Ozcan Mutlu and Bilkay Oney - Berlin State Assembly Deputies, was received by President Mehmet Ali Talat, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Fatma Ekenoglu and Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer respectively.

During the visit, Roth expressed her willingness for reunification and reconciliation in Cyprus and stressed that `Europe is the idea of open borders, not walls`.
Welcoming the decisive policy of the Turkish Cypriot Side towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, Roth expressed her willingness for playing the role of a bridge-builder in Cyprus.‘Spring is approaching. We want it not to be a meteorological spring only, but also a political one in Cyprus’ she added.

For his part, President Talat reminded that the Turkish Cypriot People clearly put forward its will for the solution of the Cyprus problem and unification during the 2004 referenda on the Annan Plan, adding that they are still seeking for a solution.

`We are the only community in Europe which remains isolated. We are looking forward for a comprehensive solution and the change in the Greek Cypriot administration gives us the hope for this` the President said.
Later, German Greens MP was received by the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Fatma Ekenoglu.

In her speech, Mrs Ekenoglu described the arrival of Miss Roth through Ercan airport as a very important development which came at a time when the Turkish Cypriot People faced many difficulties associated with the international isolations.

Ekenoglu reiterated the Turkish Cypriot will for a bi-communal, bi-zonal solution based on the UN parameters and the political equality of the two sides.

For her part, Roth stated that she knew very well the bitter past experienced by the Turkish Cypriots, but stated that it was more important to work for a peaceful future.

Received next by Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer, Roth expressing sympathy said that the consequences of the international isolation on the Turkish Cypriot People were very touching.

Welcoming Miss Roth, Soyer stressed that the Turkish Cypriot side is working for a solution based on the political equality of the two sides, the Prime Minister said they need the support of the Greens Party in this process.

Soyer criticized some circles for unjustly trying to resemble the situation in North Cyprus with that of the case of North Korea, stating that there were no similarities whatsoever.

Referring to the upcoming Talat-Christofias meeting, the Premier expressed the hope that the two leaders will reach an agreement on providing a political settlement on the basis of UN parameters.

Later in the afternoon, Roth visited the acting-rector of the Eastern Mediterranean University, where she delivered a speech on ‘EU-Turkey Relations and Cyprus’.

During her stay in North Cyprus, she will also visit the Lokmaci Barricade and the mixed village of Pile(Pyle).

ROTH REITERATES SUPPORT TO SETTLEMENT ON HER DEPARTURE FROM THE TRNC
The Co-Chairperson of the German Greens Party and member of the German Parliament Claudia Roth has stressed that she will continue to maintain her constructive support to efforts aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Describing the effects of the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriot People as ‘touching’, Roth said she will inform her European colleagues on the situation.

`Walls and isolations have no place in the common house of Europe` she stressed.
The Co-Chairperson of the German Greens Party and MP Claudia Roth held a short press briefing before departing from Ercan Airport before where the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Fatma Ekenoglu was present.

Thanking all the Turkish Cypriot officials for their overwhelming hospitality, Roth said it has been a pleasure for her to hold contacts in North Cyprus in such a decisive period in the Cyprus Question.

She stressed that Europe is very much looking forward to seeing the outcome of tomorrow’s meeting between the two leaders on the island and expressed the hope that a new window of opportunity will be opened for a settlement and the window will transform into an open door without any walls.

`We are aware of the fact that the solution of the Cyprus problem will be a long-term and difficult process as it includes critical issues such as security and demilitarization but what is most important now is to receive a positive signal from the two leaders towards a solution` she added.
Describing tomorrow’s meeting as a historic encounter; she said she was hopeful for a settlement now that there had been a change in the political leadership in South Cyprus together with the Turkish Cypriot side’s peaceful political stance.

`We have observed the negative effects of the international isolation on the Turkish Cypriot People in every aspect of their daily lives. This is an important issue both for the solution of the Cyprus problem and the credibility of the European identity as Europe is perceived to be a common house. In a common house, there should be no walls and no one should be isolated` she said.

She also underlined the duty of the European Parliament, European Commission and the European culture in providing support to solution efforts in Cyprus.

Emphasizing that they are against the ongoing division of the island and isolations, Ms Roth said the German nation had the duty to constructively support a political settlement in Cyprus.
