Boiled new potatoes and boiled eggs in olive oil.
Pasta with a tin of tuna and onions and mayonnaise.
Vine tomatoes swimming in balsamic vinegar.
Lovely soft bread and tarama.

I must say I feel very healthy for it, but somewhat hungry. I know there's a decent bit of dead cow in the fridge. Now where's that frying pan?...

During fasting you are not allowed eggs tuna and mayonnaise. Anything that comes from animal either that is their meat or product are forbidden during this period.

I'm sure my dear mother (bless her, she hasn't phoned tonight, yet) always fed us fish and boiled eggs on fasting days and halva and bread and olives. In other words her idea of fasting was no meat. Perhaps we were a liberal orthodox family.

Thats the fasting idea for children usually. Actually doctors advice parents not to force their children into fasting or if they do avoid just meat but not the products of the animals like egg, milk cheese, yogurt etc etc.
