AVCI Reacts to CHRISTOFIAS

Postby halil » Sat Mar 08, 2008 7:48 pm

Deputy Prime Minister –Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has reacted to statements by the newly elected Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias describing Turkey as an invader on the island.

He reminded that Christofias, like many of his AKEL comrades owed their life to the Turkish Peace Operation
In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry’s press bureau, the Foreign Minister said that the international community perceived provocative statements issued by the Greek Cypriot leader during his election campaign as being part of the ‘election atmosphere and conditions.

He however stated that such statements continued even after the elections.

Foreign Minister Avci also pointed out that the Greek Cypriot leader while expressing his support for a federal settlement on the island was also putting forward demands aimed at removing UN parameters on the Cyprus Problem.

"His demands will turn the Turkish Cypriot people a minority within a Greek Cypriot State, forcing them to migrate," he warned.
He also stated that the Turkish Cypriots are ready for a new partnership based on political equality of the two peoples, a bi-zonal structure, the equal status of founder states, and effective and de facto guarantee of Turkey.

"We have set the end of 2008 as a target, and Turkey is supporting this position. However, the statements of the Greek Cypriot administration indicates that it is not ready to reach a settlement in the near future and is planning to maintain the status quo so as to gain time," he told.

This guy is going well over the top - apparently now that Cyprus has a new president, Turkey should not be called 'occupier' - Christofias should remember he was saved by a peace operation by Turkey.
Don't push it matey...

I read that in a couple of Turkish papers with no clarification, how the president was saved by Turkey in the peace operation. Can someone please explain that?

I think the first thing that Christofias can do to shut those up about why Turkey came is to verify how many GCs the coupist killed before Turkey set one foot on the island......The numbers I have found come to around 3000 GCs but blaming Turkey for the whole 6000 is better for them I suppose....

By July 15, 1974, a powerful force of mainland Greek troops had assembled in Cyprus and with their backing, the Greek Cypriot National Guard overthrew Makarios and installed one Nicos Sampson as "president." On July 22, the Washington Star News reported: "Bodies littered the streets and there were mass burials... People told by Makarios to lay down their guns were shot by the National Guard."

Missing persons, what is the truth?

On April 17, 1991, Ambassador Nelson Ledsky testified before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee that "most of the 'missing persons' disappeared in the first days of July 1974, before the Turkish intervention on the 20th. Many killed on the Greek side were killed by Greek Cypriots in fighting between supporters of Makarios and Sampson."

On Nov. 6, 1974, Ta Nea reported that dates from the graves of Greek Cypriots killed in the five days between July 15-20 were erased in order to blame these deaths on the subsequent Turkish military action.

On March 3, 1996, the Greek Cypriot Cyprus Mail wrote: "(Greek) Cypriot governments have found it convenient to conceal the scale of atrocities during the July 15 coup in an attempt to downplay its contribution to the tragedy of the summer of 1974 and instead blame the Turkish invasion for all casualties. There can be no justification for any government that failed to investigate this sensitive humanitarian issue. The shocking admission by the Clerides government that there are people buried in Nicosia cemetery who are still included in the list of the 'missing' is the last episode of a human drama which has been turned into a propaganda tool."

On Oct. 19 1996, Mr. Georgios Lanitis wrote: "I was serving with the Foreign Information Service of the Republic of Cyprus in London... I deeply apologize to all those I told that there are 1,619 missing persons. I misled them. I was made a liar, deliberately, by the government of Cyprus . .... today it seems that the credibility of Cyprus is nil."
