ok, i got a real good one. when i left CY, on Dec. 26th, you had not yet gone officially to euros, but on the cab ride to the airport, that's all i had left. upon arrival at the airport, the driver told me how much the fare was in pounds. i told him i didn't have any pounds, how much in euros? he rolled his eyes at me, and said politely, "you pay me next time you are in Cyprus!"
i reminded him he would be needing the euros in just another week...how much?--and he came up with a figure for me.

i thought that was an extremely nice gesture on his part.

ALl I'm saying is that practically the only SOuth African visitors to this island whether for holiday or to stay are from the very large Cypriot community in South Africa who are slowly making their way back. I have 2 cousins of mine from Jo'burg who have decided to return this year.

So GG's story was a genuine story regarding Cypriot kindness. Well done GG.

No need to apologise ... these things have a way of getting passed on.

The expat may have been influenced by the positive Cypriot Zeitgeist. :D

Or...........something to do the nice weather? Remember what Celia Johnson said in Brief Encounter? something like " I think we would all be so much nicer to each other if we lived in a warm country" But seriously though - people DO seem to be nicer to each other in Cyprus. Why, only last year, I told a rather tipsy English lady her skirt was tucked into her knickers.............In England I would have just laughed!!! But now I think : There but for the grace of God.............

One Saturday I was in the centre of Limassol. I bought some oranges from the covered market then had lunch at a small restaurant nearby. When I arrived home, I realised that I had left the bag of oranges on the chair next to me in the restaurant. Was I worried? No, this is Cyprus and I knew I would be able to pick up the oranges on Monday.
I went to the same small restaurant on Monday lunchtime, and as soon as the proprietress saw me, she brought over the bag of oranges without me even having to say anything.
Cypriots are wonderful people!
