Bitter oranges.

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

....... and no I am not bitter that my "Bitter Lemons" thread was locked and you opened this "Bitter Oranges" one to rub in my face!

I know it was your exchanges about the conspiracy that the Durrell's were spies and not journalists / innocent authors that brought the lock upon us ...

I am not going to retaliate by getting yours closed.

But I may use it to continue disseminating progress on my lemon mountain .... :P

Compromise? :D

There is diversity in the family of Citrus fruit .... regardless.

(..."family" used loosely before we pedantise further!).

As for spermicidal effects, yes the acid would denature proteins.

But to avoid locking this thread: how can I say this delicately? :?

... at what point in the procedure did the lemons come out?

I sense that you are a fellow etymology fan. It seems that the root of the Turkish word 'narenciye' is the Farsi 'narang'. You will find a detailed study of the etymology of this Farsi word here:

Many thanks Tim.

One quick browse through my 'Original' Ottoman Redhouse printed in 1890, Constantinople, lends me to believe that the contents are 38% Arabic, 44% Farsi and 18% pure Turkish. So no surprise there. Of course this is a guestimate.
