Washington DC

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Washington DC

Postby erolz » Tue Apr 12, 2005 3:20 am

I have just returned home after a trip to Washington DC. My level of ignorance about Washington DC prior to my trip is embarasing. However I did learn some things there.

There is a state called Washington that is nothing to do with Washington DC (it's on the other side of the country).

Washinton DC is in the district of columbia (the DC part). The DC is not part of any of the US states and exists outside of the states entirely.

Residence of Washington DC have none of the political representation that residence of the various states in the US have (no senators, congressmen etc etc).

I have to say this struck me as a bizzare anomoly. For a country founded on the cry 'no taxation without representation'to have such blatant taxation without representation in the very heart of it's political system seems to me bizzare.

Erol,

not sure how this is related but here is another interesting fact about DC. The residents of Washington DC, although they do not have representation in the US government, they obviously contribute to the overall electorates during the election.

If I am not mistaken they were the electorate with the least Bush supporters with 90% of the votes going to Kerry and 9% going to Bush! In fact thats less than any other urban city in the United States!

The first and last time I went to DC was back in '91 I think when we went to protest against FYROM's decision to be called Macedonia. It was fun but I was only 7 years old so dont remember much :).

Yep. Seattle is in Washington state and it's well-worth visiting if you get the chance. Also, Microsoft headquarters are also in Redmond, Washington.

Washington DC, my favorite city in the US...haven't been there for almost 2 years. Did you happen to visit the Smithsonian Museum?
