BORED WITH CYPRIOT CUISINE?

Postby Bucksboy » Wed Mar 05, 2008 2:20 pm

Are you like me and find yourself becoming bored with the routine food in Cyprus?
Blessed with seasonal fruit and vegetables here, why is it that restaurants continually serve up the old favourites......moussaka & chips, kleftico, lumps of pork fat on a stick called souvla. What they do serve is bland and very often heated again from previous days.

Why can't chefs ring the changes and cook some Mediterranean food that reflects the seasons like they do in France or Spain. All they have to do is open a Mediterranean cook book and follow instructiuons. I can do it at home so why not in your local taverna?

I went to Troodos when it snowed a few days ago, in search of a decent bowl of homemade soup on a cold day! No such luck....only tinned soup & surly expensive service.

Next time you go to Troodos drop me a line and I will tell you where to go.
The good food is out there, but it is mostly in the home.I never tire of Cypriot food in fact my mouth waters at the thought of it.

No no Purdey...listen to Bucky Boy, its crap. We should learn to cook a little more Mediterranean. Bucky Boy from Essex has decided that the cuisine in Cyprus, an island in the Med is not Mediterranean enough for him.

Purdey,
Don't get me wrong...I love it if it is cooked with some gusto as it is in other Med. countries. There is no reason why it can't be the same here as we have all the ingredients and most are home grown in Cyprus.
What you get is not so cheap anymore and the quality not so good.
How many times have I been served up with a nondescript limp Greek salad and charged a bloody fortune for it. Complain and most just shrug their shoulders.

If you are eating out, try and see where the locals go. I have had one or two bad meals here, but most have been excellent. As for variety and freshness - I have very rarely been disapointed. Pides, kleftico, kebaps etc etc plenty to choose from - kolokas with chicken, molohiya - maybe you are eating out in the wrong areas!!!

Tess

ps - I have eaten in the troodos area, and enjoyed a fabulous meal of home made crusty bread and soup, followed by a meat stew with whole cyprus potatoes - shame you were so disapointed!
