Do Cypriots hate the British ?

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Postby Piratis » Wed Mar 05, 2008 10:27 pm

Cypriots don't hate the British people. What most Cypriots hate is the British bases which basically means that part of our island is still a British colony, as well as the British foreign policy in regards to the Cyprus problem.

Some arrogant people believe the Cypriots owe them because they come to Cyprus as tourists. This is nonsense. Cyprus offers products and services and others are free to buy or not to buy them. Just like we buy cars from the UK or we send our students to universities there, the British are free, if they want, to buy the products and services we offer.

The UK is the one who owns to Cyprus because they have two huge military bases on Cyprus and they don't pay even a cent for them while they should have.

You are correct , the Cypriots DO NOT HATE THE BRITISH PEOPLE .
A very large number of Cypriots , men mostly , are married to British women , their children are part Cypriots and part British . The actual figure must be in excess of 100 thousand Cypriots with English blood in their veins.
My wife who does not speak Greek , looks 100% English , has been in Cyprus hundreds of times and has never encountered any adverse reaction from any one , on the contrary she feels much safer in Cyprus than in London . She has never ever through the 40 or so years that she has been coming to Cyprus encountered any anti-English feelings.
What we Cypriots find un acceptable are the actions of successive British governments mostly detrimental to the Cypriots interests , politically that is .
I hear on the grapevine that the British having become experts in employing black Africans to manage our traffic systems , are now hiring out these skillful arrogant , ignorant Mercenary Traffic Wardens to the Cypriot government in lieu of rent dues for the bases !!
One of my vans was ticketed and clumped yesterday in Brixton . I called the Mafia to pay my dues and a thick African at the end of the line asked me to spell London Road , I replied LONDON , like Paris New York you know London . She replied how spell Paris !!!

Do Cypriots hate the British? Of course they do. Who wouldn't?

Even the Brits hate the Brits, venture out into any city centre after 11:00 pm. They're busy kicking the shit out of each other. No wonder the squaddies have been banned from Ayia Napa. They're scum! Just like the rest of the chavs and riffraff who have invaded Cyprus.

Surfing the boards, I came across this little tale of woe. Not even in the north can the Brits find peace. Serves them right.

Says a lot about the place though! What a corrupt little dump. Reminds of some Middle Eastern scrubby Arab place.

Just tried to access the link that R. quotes. It's a "northern cyprus" forum that requires me to register to just view the site! I shan't bother with that.

Not too dissimilar to needing to get a visa stamp to view the occupied villages.

Hate the British? No. Wnat the bases to go? Yes. But then I have yet to meet an English person who would not like the American bases in Britain to go, it is about the same sort of thing.

Trouble by drunken soldiers, well we had that way back in the 50s and we got used to it. It will stop when they close down the bases.

What do you do with the drunken tourists ? I wish I held your confidence that the bases will close. From what I gather the British Government are putting millions more into updating the bases, for families and for military hardware.

I dont think the bases is an issue after all they contribute their own part to the Cyprus economy through consumption , invetsment , hiring labour etc. I dont think Cypriots hate the British . Hate is one thing and moaning is another. The effort should be on re uniting the island and not geting rid of bases. what difference does it make getting rid of the bases but not the Turkish troops. There is no diference .

Yes,but who is saying GO.
At election time there were murmours, and now and then some spotty youths throw a few stones at Cypriots working on the bases. But there is no concerted effort by the Government of Cyprus to say GO...and the EU never want to enter into any discussion when asked.

Funny you should say that. Christofias from Athens said the following

"BBF blah blah blah...and demilitarisation of the entire island...not just Greek or Turkish but all other milliaties as well.

Me thinks this is why Gordo was the first to invite him round for a chat/threat.
