Not all of us drive hire cars, but yes we are still foreigners.
I will identify myself in future. How about a large window decal with "Miserable Jonny Foreigner"

The love of animals, idyllic life in the Greek islands, Tranquility (he must have been joking) in Bellapais. Both brothers were at peace with themselves. Their books and TV series were great.

D. Would you or indeed anyone else agree with what I have heard that maybe he had other, less honourable motives for his extensive travels during the latter years of the GB occupation?

It would not surprise me at all. I need to check his fathers movements too. The two brothers travelled as kids with their father. Interesting thought.
Is there something you know that we might found out. (if we know where to look?)

A very quick browse through the web makes me wonder where wither would have the time for any 'cloak and dagger' stuff. Come out with it, what do you know Bill?

Thanks for the compliment D. but regretfully I have to disappoint. I know nothing but I would say it just seems to me that writing a (travel) book is a very plausible cover for intelligence gathering of another type for someone who worked at the GB High Commission and further that duty is terribly important to the Brit middle classes.

Gerald Durrel is the animal man, Lawrence was the writer and journalist. He spent some time in Nicosia during the troubles and I think he drank at Antonakis Bar, near our house. I have vague memories of him or someone pointing him out. Word was that he was spying, but then they said that about all journalists in the 50s.

Oracle,

I have the exact same problem with a surplus of lemons from our one and only lemon tree.

I think we will emply Kafenes suggestion and make a lake of lemonade and freeze it for summer.

What is all this nonsense about lemonades? Best way for any sensible, self-respecting, right thinking Cypriot to use up a surplus of millions of lemons is to get a suitably large number of pigs, slaughter and bbq them and douse liberally with lashings of lemon juice.

Sorry, no offence intended to our northern brothers and sisters so can I add the option of a flock of sheep to the pigs refered to above.

bill cobbet .... always the diplomat

As the proud possessor of a few more lemons  ..... I am going to get going with Purdey's, pot pouri suggestion first, otherwise I'll need a trip to the supermarket ( boring) for tons of sugar for most other suggestions.

I love that conspiracy theory about Durrell since I had that uncomfortable feeling whilst reading Bitter Lemons and had to stop reading ....

I had the distinct impression .... he was not "with us".... :?
