Well I'd like to think it teaches them respect, responsibility, discipline etc plus gives them a little independence from the typical Cypriot mum.

To be honest I'm not sure it works but there's lots of fun to be had away from the wife and kids when they go for their allotted training days back in the army  .

Personally I regret that the UK stopped national service ~ had we kept it, it may have got some of the nasty little herberts off the streets and taught them how to behave in society .

To be honest national service is not the hardest of things to do ~it just robs you of two years that you could really be doing something better.

wasting their time and stealing 2 years from their valuable time and stopping them to get to start for a real life.

Agree with Bill.
But theres always the ones that because of their "dads friend" who happens to be a "general" learn the exact opposite of what they should learn.
I do think the national service is a good thing overall but maybe 2 years is too much. If it was down to 1 then it would have been perfect.
Even if it sounds gay, the army turns a boy into a man.

For me my service was an eye opener regarding the true composition of society. It's the only place where you are forced to coexist and deal with people from all social layers
