To be honest I'm not sure it works but there's lots of fun to be had away from the wife and kids when they go for their allotted training days back in the army

Personally I regret that the UK stopped national service ~ had we kept it, it may have got some of the nasty little herberts off the streets and taught them how to behave in society .
To be honest national service is not the hardest of things to do ~it just robs you of two years that you could really be doing something better.

What was good about the UK National Service was that they would train you in a profession that you could use in civvy street, or at least give you help in finding a suitable job. Nowadays I feel sorry for the poor youngsters, fighting wars abroad not of their own doing. Pathetic.
National Service is ok when you have an Empire (not saying that an empire is a good thing), you disperse all the young bloods all around the world. Now they end up in Irak, Afghanistan or even worse Ayia Napa.
