Sky signal

Postby webbo » Sun Mar 02, 2008 7:47 am

I have a sky plus box and 3.1 m dish but recently have had little or no signal for the UK domestic channels ie BBC ITV etc. When I check the signal test it shows the signal strength to be stronger and the quality much better for signal two.
I tried changing the cables over at the back of the box and the signal test gives exactly the same result indicating problem is not within the cables.

Anybody out there experiencing anything like this and does anybody have a solution?

Thanks

Mine is fine… did the wind move your dish perhaps?

Hi Grump,

No I don't think so and do not want to start tweaking yet. As I have a strong signal on the second cable from same LNB it would suggest dish is in the correct location. Don't understand why the signal changes when i swop over the leads at the back of the box

Sounds like recently you are experiencing signal loss from your dish....Either the dish is out of alignment or there could be an obstruction in the feed horn attached to the LNB (usually an insect) degrading your signal.
When you check the signal level in the menu, the bar graph you see is for the default transponder (11778V) which is on Astra 2A and has nothing to do with the terrestrial channels you lost, which are on Astra 2D..
Keep in mind,SKY uses five different satellites to transmit the whole package.
Some of these satellites have very strong signal in Cyprus and some weaker (2D) the dish must be aligned in such a position to receive the maximum signal from 2D while not loosing the others.
The reason input two shows higher signal level is down to the fact that tuner #2 is slightly more sensitive than tuner #1...(these signal readings are NOT reliable at all) the only way of determining the signal level is to use a professional spectrum analyzer/signal meter to measure the BER (bit error rate)
Unless you have such a tool and you know what you are doing,i wouldn't advise you to try to tweak the dish, you will loose all...call a professional who knows his stuff.

Hi Webbo,
Where you live has it been raining recently? maybe just before you experienced problems? Sometimes water can get into the cable if a connector has no waterproof tape where connector attaches to cable.

Depends who did the original installation, some engineers put a self amalgamating tape around the connectors when they are exposed to the elements, I would suspect that because it's normally always hot and dry in Cyprus this may have been overlooked.

Have a look and let me know.

Cheers

In the end you were not far wrong.

Took TV and box up to the roof and gave dish a gentle nudge and it all came back.
Thanks to all who gave suggestions
