Who is supporting the Turkish cause?
By Loucas Charalambous
“THE ASTONISHING thing is that what we hear in Turkish from statements by Turkish officials, I hear being repeated in Greek by some in the Republic of Cyprus. We hear our people supporting, in Greek, the arguments of the Turkish Cypriot and Turkish side. You judge if this helps the Hellenism of Cyprus and our case.”
The really astonishing thing is that the president of a state would stoop so low as to make such deplorable public pronouncements. What is even more astonishing is the fact that the state, of which the president treats the citizens with such contempt, is a member of the European Union.
This is why I agree 100 per cent with those who say that the EU committed a grave error in accepting Cyprus as a member. We are a politically primitive people, a people who elected as president a man whose true colours are betrayed by the appalling above statement, and who, objectively speaking, did not deserve to have become a member of the Union.
When I wrote back in 2002 that the leadership of AKEL, in choosing Tassos Papadopoulos as its candidate, would turn political life back to the 1960s, many readers and close friends disagreed, accusing me of being excessive. Today, not only these people, but members of AKEL whom I did not know, call and tell me: “Sorry, but you were right. How could we not have seen this?”
The discourse used by the president and his allies is neither not coincidental nor unprecedented. It is the discourse of Papadopoulos’ generation. This was the kind of language used in the decade of the sixties. Whoever disagreed with Makarios’ political brinkmanship, which led to inter-communal conflict and bloodshed, was branded a paid agent, enemy of the country and a traitor. And he had to be eliminated. The vilification and slandering of the regime’s political opponents and critics was a daily practice, as it is now. We, ‘yes’ voters are arguing the Turkish line, claims Papadopoulos, deviously asking the people to “judge” if we are helping the “Hellenism of Cyprus”.
In other words: ‘these traitors are scheming together with the foreigners against the interests of Cyprus, and I am the rock which protects you. Isolate the traitors and follow me. You need me to protect and save you from local and foreign foes.’
As Mr Papadopoulos is resorting to dares, this column has decided to accept his challenge. In future editions it will look at how and who helped Turkey; who actually spoke Turkish in 1963. It will investigate the activities of the Akritas organisation which laid the foundations for turkification of the north of Cyprus. Akritas had a chief and deputy chief, and it would be interesting to see who had furnished Turkey with the arguments back then.
Then we can see at whose hands “the Turkish Cypriots suffered a great deal” as Demetris Christofias claimed on a TV interview not so long ago. We can also see the type of thinking that prevailed at the time and which took the country down a slippery path to chaos. We can also see in what language they used to write their ‘secret’ plans for the dissolution of the Cyprus Republic, of which, today, they claim to be the saviours.
I thought this piece was thought provocing and wonder what you guys think of it.
