Giving birth in Cyprus!

Postby Athens » Sun Apr 10, 2005 6:52 pm

Dear All,

I have joined this forum in order to help my friend. She is going to have a baby with a Cypriot, and she is very afraid of coming there as she doesn't know a thing about how hospitals treatments look like.
So, I would like to ask any of willing-to-help Cypriots ladies to tell me how long do they keep women in hospitals, is there any special services ( a nurse that comes to your house when the baby is at home) and their experiences I would like to hear.

Thanks a lot.
A.

Hi,

I have two children, my little girl is 2 1/2 and my little boy is 5 months, I gave birth to both of them in a private clinic. I attended free prenatal classes at the general hospital in Limassol with my husband which we both found interesting.
I have many friends who have given birth in hospital and they are fine with it, the big difference for me was that in the hospital there is no gynaecologist present unless there is a complication and then you get which ever one is on call that day (there are about 3 that work at the hospital) so that means it might not be the one that has been following you through your 9 months! Privately though you are taken from day 1 with the doctor of your choice.
If your friend does n't have a private Gynaecologist I would be happy to give her the details of mine, he is American Cypriot so speaks both languages fluently.
As for her stay in hospital in depends on her birth, if there were no complications with you then they usualy let you leave after 48 hours.

Anyway I hope I was some help to your friend!

Dear marina,

Thank you so much for your reply. I thought that nobody will come up with some information.

Just one more thing I need to know. When they let you go from the hospital, nobody (a nurse) turns up at home to check how you and the baby are doing?
This is her main question because this is her first child and she is so afraid if she's gonna do everything in a proper way. But I thought that she might pay somebody to come and help in the begining.

Dear Athens,

Unfortunatley there are no mid-wifes unless you are in the British army bases.

I too was petrified but I bought a couple of books that explained everything about the first nine months and the birth and then I got another one about the first year (WHAT TO EXPECT by Arlene Eisenberg, Heidi E.Murkoff & Sandee E. Hathaway), Kyriacos Book Shop in Limassol has a very wide range of these sort of books.

The other thing I did was ask the nurses while we were both in the clinic to show me how to bath, clean and feed the baby and they did, my pediatrian also had alot of patients with me and I could call him any time of the day or night.

Athens please tell your friend not to worry and the best thing to prepare her is to educate herself by reading whats happening to her body and about the birth.

Hope I was some help to her!!

Dear Athens

Your friend can always ask the clinic/hospital which she will decide to give birth, about visiting nurses.
Also tell her not to worry, if she has a problem she can always get out from the flat, knock next door and the ppl next door will help. We still have this in Cyprus, ppl still help each other in the time of need especially a young mother who really needs help for a newborn child.

Wishing all the best with her pregnancy.

Thanks a lot again!

She has already bougt the book What to expect... And it's realy impressive on how many languages that book is translated!

Thank you A LOT one more time, and you really helped!

My advice to her was not to worry, too, and that she should not be so afraid. It's not pleasant to raise a baby in a foriegn country, but she should be next to her husband.

Thanks one more time.
