"PAWS" (CAPCA) FACTS, FIGURES & COSTS

For those of you still interetsed in PAWS dog shelter I have written this post which will give you some insight into the day to day essentials of the charity.

Paws dog shelter was begun about 22 years ago and was (until last December) located in Yeroskipou, Paphos on rented land. After many years of dashed hopes & plans for a new dedicated shelter, we were finally able to locate to our brand new brick built and properly designed dog shelter at Achalia, near Paphos airport. The cost of this venture amounted to 650,000 euros most of which was raised by public donation and fund raising.

The annual donation from the Cypriot government amounts to only 1,550 euros and our current weekly running costs amount to between 700 and 850 euros. This includes food and vet fees which are ever increasing.

We have approximately 35 volunteer workers who are responsible for the daily cleaning, feeding and general care of never less that 140 dogs. We are open 365 days every year for the sole purpose of caring for the neglected, abandoned and injured dogs of the Paphos area.

From January to Decemebr 2007, 834 dogs were brought into the shelter and 312 were located to new homes here in Cyprus and to various countries abroad. This huge figure illustrates the problem in Cyprus when you bear in mind that we are one of two dog shelters in the Paphos area alone.

We are in constant need of volunteers to assist with cleaning and the general care of the dogs and we particularly want to encourage the Cypriot community to help us. There must be many Cypriots around the Paphos area with idle time to fill who could donate just one morning per week at the shelter.

Cheshire Cat,
Donations and fund raising are basically our life blood together with the sales from our shop in Chloraka, Paphos. Like many governments throught the world, the Cypriot government remains virtually blind when it comes to forking out good money for animal welfare. It is one of the sad facts of living here that we all constantly see unwanted & neglected cats and dogs and other animals and remains a testament to the cruelty of mankind.
