Importing Televisions!

Postby Yorkshirefolk » Fri Feb 29, 2008 8:04 pm

Hi everyone,

After 2 years of waiting we've finally got the keys to our place in Cyprus... next job furnishing it!!!

We've been shopping around and things like LCD TV's seem quite expensive compared to the UK. Has anyone bought one from the UK and had it delivered to Cyprus? I'd be interested in people's opinions and experiences

I am not sure if LCD television from the UK would work in Cyprus, I know that traditional television sets do not work. I would bite the bullet on this one and just buy one locally (in Cyprus I mean), but buy Plasma or rear-projector not LCD, there poor quality and extremely expensive.

Furnishing in general is cheaper in Cyprus, goods seem to be of higher quality. There is no mass production here, therefore it's either extremely good quality, or terrible, make sure you go for good quality.

Most of the quality TV's on sale nowadays are multi system which will work in Cyprus ~~ it's only the sound channel thats different.

To be honest I wouldn't bother shipping TV's across to Cyprus unless you are bringing a container and there's room in it for them.

Prices have really come down on electrical goods recently and I would imagine it's probably cheaper to buy in Cyprus especially if you take into account the added shipping costs from the UK.

Also ~ think about the warranty ~ I don't think Curry's etc send their service men out as far as Cyprus

Hi Bill,
We are moving over to Cyprus at the end of April and we were going to bring a couple of TV's over as they are fairly new. I am now confused as to whether they will work or not! :? You say that most of the quality TV's are multi system and its only the sound channel that is different - does that mean we would get a picture, but no sound
Other than the TV's we are buying all other eletrocal equipment in Cyprus, as totally agree about the warranty issue. But just thought our current TV's would be ok until such time they broke and then buy new in Cyprus...maybe not though!! :)

Cyprus uses a different transmission standard to the UK. So, if you want to watch Cyprus TV from a rooftop aerial then you might have problems getting sound.

However, if you are connecting to a satellite system for your TV you will have no problems.

Thanks for the advice everyone, never thought about warranties!

:D
Rather than risk not getting sound i think I'll give the Cypriot ecnomy a little boost and buy next time we're out.

Our apartment is over near Coral Bay/ Paphos area. Does anyone know of good sky installers and how much should I expect to pay for the sky dish and stuff installing?

Thanks again y'all

We brought our cheap ASDA bought 28" widescreen TV with us 3 years ago. It didn't work too well on Cypriot TV, but no problem with the satellite. However it gave up this week and we have just purchased a 32" Toshiba flat panel LCD tv which cost €700. Don't know what that would cost in the UK now, but the picture is great!

i too wouldnt bother sending one from the uk.

and i wouldnt agree with not buying an lcd.. plasmas and rear projection are being phased out for a reason.

just make sure its got decent resolution (1080i or 1080p, HD ready or FullHD), and you'll be fine

for 32 inchers the price is around 400-450 CY pounds (divide by 0.585 to get euro value), for the resolutions mentiuoned above. and to be more specific the sony and sharp ones are 450cy since i've been looking to buy one this week. plus that was dealer price, not independant store price, which are usually a bit cheaper
