Winter tourism worst in recent memory.

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

I wonder how many of these winter tourists are looking for property, has the demand dropped yet as in the UK. One of the agents I follow in Larnaca appears to have stopped trading, the website has been down for a month now.

For the average British tourist it's often much cheaper to travel to the USA and have a great holiday than it is to have two weeks in Cyprus.

A guy I used to work with bought a place in Florida ~ he often commented he could fly to his holiday home twice for the same price I paid for one return flight to Cyprus.

Bill
I think you have summed it up well in your posts.
For those looking to no frills, budget airlines I wouldn't hold my breath. If they are North European based they would probably be forced to charge much the same as anybody else. If I am not mistaken the secret of no frills, cheap flights lies in the amount of journeys an aircraft can make in a day carrying fare paying passengers allowing for a 50 minute or so turnaround. On that basis beyond a maximum flight time of 3 hours (4 hrs turnaround) it would render the service unprofitable, consequently the fares would need to reflect the ratio between passengers carried & cost.
In addition you have the delights of a plastic bag strewn landscape with abandoned rusting car sculptures & not least the perception of the rip off culture possibly sending people elsewhere.
We can but hope the think tanks settle down & think a little more rationally. It can & must be done.

I am sad at how Limassol is turning out to be honest. Many tourist operators do not now advertise Limassol in the UK as a holiday resort. Unless you have been before and know what you want you only get to Limassol when all else is booked and you are allocated on arrival. The majority of three star hotels have gone and what has taken their place are extremely expensive blocks of flats of which there are plenty that remain empty for years. (some hotels have been illegally converted btw without the appropriate permissions) All for a fast buck!

The landscape is constantly altering and Cyprus is becoming more of a concrete jungle which is very displeasing to the tourist eye!!

Flights are expensive and put Cyprus out of the reach of many (especially those visiting ex pats who are living here) They could get a full package holiday in Spain or Turkey for the price of the flight tickets here!!

Its all a self fullfilling prophesy really, the more desolate and empty a resort appears the more desolate and empty it becomes as bars and tavernas shut down and it is very very difficult to bring that back without hard work and building on the infrastructure to attract the tourist.

They are building marinas for yachtsmen to go where? You moor in Cyprus you are limited to sailing around the island, maybe going as far as Beirut. Then what?

As for thematic and activity tourism, people taking cooking, wine, horse trekking etc holidays, Cyprus is a dud. The industry needs an overhaul. And Cyprus needs a ferry service at least twice weekly to link to Europe. Even if it loses money.

You're wrong Nikitas. We would setoff from Limassol to Paphos to Kastelorizo and from then onto the islands. You can pretty much go wherever you like with anything bigger than a 30ft'r.

hi purdey, things are very tight here, for a lot of people, in the UK. prices of fuel and utilities, and mortgage payments have shot up, and most cannot make ends meet. but i would of thought that any holidays would of been booked up way before this happened, and will of already been paid for.

Sweetiepie,

Limassol was never an oil painting on the best of days.

Probably, but at least I feel welcome in Cyprus.
