COMMITTEE OF CITIZENS FOR THE OPENING OF THE LEDRA STREET WELCOMES DEVELOPMENTS ABOUT LOKMACI

The Committee of Citizens for the Opening of the Lokmaci Gate has welcomed the latest developments on the opening of a gate at the Lokmaci.

The committee said that the opening of the gate would be the first step towards the reunification of the island.

In a statement today, the President of the Committee Valentina Sofokleous thanked the UN Special Representative in Cyprus – Chief of Mission Michael Moller for his latest efforts on the opening of a gate at Lokmaci in Lefkosa.

In her statement, Ms Sofokleous said that the committee is pleased with the positive approaches of the Mayor of Lefkosa Turkish Municipality Cemal Bulutoglulari and the Mayor of South Lefkosa Eleni Mavro.

Repeating her call for the opening of the Lokmaci Gate, she said that the committee – which is a bi-communal civil society organization, would be very pleased to see the realisation of its objective.

Noting that the opening of a gate at the point would be the first step towards the reunification of the island, she called on all bi-communal NGOs to contribute to the new negotiations process expected to be launched soon.

Well I hope that the Turkish army sees the light in that moving back its soldiers with guns will enable the gate to open and for the people to begin interacting much more.

This is time tfor Turkey to show that it has the best interests of Cypriots and not extending her territory.,

to be honest halil, I don't believe that I visited the area I was a little lost, I did go to the bazzar what appeared to be the tourist area, but I was also feeling very intimidated by the Turkish flags and I did not speak to anyone because I did not feel at all comfortable being a Cypriot who speaks Greek visiting. The other times I crossed over i did not go anywhere near where i visited the first time.

May I say that it is not the Turkish part of Nicosia either it is the currently Turkish speaking occupied part of Nicosia.

What was evident from the free area is the Turkish flags and the Turkish soldiers and that i find intimidating and constant reminder that a Turkish force is occupying Cyprus, not that there is another part of Cypriot population living on the other side of the wall but rather a threatening force awaiting to shoot anyone who dares cross that gate. Now you can accept my account or dismiss it but that is my experience both from the free side and The occupied side.

DT,
it doesn!t mean that military is going to pass from the road when they opened the gate .
have a look at the present condition at southern part of the Nicosia . Now GC soldier standing at his post . many civilians are passing front of his post . it doesn't mean he will stay their when the gate opens . these allagations are only help to mixed peoples minds or helps to find excuses for both side .

In my opinion, the idea of opening many check point by the Turkish Cypriots BEFORE A SOLUTION just promotes acceptance of the so-called TRNC. It's there way of FORCING the acceptance of the so-called TRNC on our people without any official signature of a reunification plan or the handing over of the Varosha. If their good will gesture is so sincere, why keep Varosha closed!

Off course there is a soldier on our side Halil. never said there wasn't. Just replying to your post saying there are no soldiers in the north of ledra street and obviously as my pic shows there are.

If there really are no soldiers as you say then why did the Turkish side have such trouble acepting the removal of troops as a pre-condition of opening the gate?

If there are no guards, then you should have accepted as it would be just us who would remove our post. But thats not the story from the Turkish millitary...is it?
