The area around Ledra street should be demilitarised on both sides. Period. No Turkish Army and no National Guard.

we're not allowed to ask for a street to be millitary free mate. We'll look like fascists trying to block progress.

I'm not a frequent visitor, but I have been to both ends of the street on a few occasions. I have never actually seen a Turkish or TC soldier there. I presume that they carry out patrols, but when the wall was down (there is now a temporary barrier, the same as on the GC side) all I saw was a TC policeman, sitting on a chair, whose job seemed to be to stop innocents walking into the buffer zone. On the GC side, every time I have been there, there are two armed sentries (I don't like to ask if there guns have bullets in them). The objection seems strange anyway, since the first thing you encounter after leaving the GC customs post at the Metehan crossing is a GC military post (No. 104 if I remember correctly).

As for flags, the Greek flag on the GC side is much bigger and higher than anything on the TC side of the barrier.

So instead of GCs saying 'we will not open a crossing until TCs take away their soldiers and flags', why not say to your government 'take away our soldiers and flags then ask TCs to do the same'?

a) Because the TC's won't
b) Turkish troops now patrol from under that bridge. When the bridge was built the result was that patrols by Turkish troops were able to be extended into the buffer zone since they now advanced a few metres in order to include a parrallel road to their patrols.

You can't beat the Turkish army mate, they know what they're doing. Why do you think they're objecting to removing the troops from the opening?

I think the bridge has been taken down.

The entire Green Line is patrolled by everybody, except for around the Ledra Palace Hotel.

Not sure what would happen if GC troops started patrolling the buffer zone alongside the Turkish troops observer.

Unfortunately the luxury of patrolling the buffer zone is reserved for the UN and the more agressive of the 2 armies.

Anyway the latest proposal by the govt in Dec 2007 does not mention any of this. Why is the crossing not open yet?

This is the proposal:
- Opening the crossing point at Ledra street without any side proposing any terms or preconditions to UNFICYP.
- The two military sides to agree that UNFICYP will fully exercise the mandate, given to it by the Security Council, in the area of the buffer zone as this is marked in UNFICYP maps.
- The crossing point to open as soon as the practical arrangements are completed, which will have to meet all safety needs, as set out by UNFICYP, after consultations with the interested parties

What is wrong with your side?

I don't know what is our tactics DT,
why the Talat will ask to Bulutoglulari that he is in charge to talk with Your side major of the Nicosia ?
is it tactic ?

I am with Halil on this one. No tactics. For a long time there was no wall on the TC side, just waiting for GC side to take down their wall. Ex-GC president started demanding conditions that apply at no other crossing.

Even when, with the world's media watching, he pulled down the wall, he immediately put up another temporary one. Now TCs have put up a similar one too.

As far as I know, there are no conditions on the TC side. Take down the GC temporary wall, the TC wall will be down in the time it takes to make a few phone calls.

I'm sorry but if you can't read the post before you then its not worth arguing. DId you read what i wrote about the latest proposals from the GC side in 2007? Can you find the conditions in that?
