‘Open the Gates Initiative’ had declared that opening border crossings between the Northern Cyprus and South Cyprus will improved relations between the two peoples of the island and break down psychological walls.
Committees set up within the initiative to have the Ledra, Pirgo, Yesilirmak, Erenkoy and Lefke borders opened for crossings held a meeting at Astromerit yesterday and came to an agreement on a final declaration.
The declaration welcomed the election of Dimitris Hristofyas as the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration and the efforts shown by both TC leader Mehmet Ali Talat and Mr. Hristofyas towards finding a solution on the island.
'Both leaders have shown a desire for the opening of more border crossings between the two sides and as a European Cyprus, we cannot accept the continuation of the historic mistake of having closed borders on the island’, it stated.
‘Open the gates Initiative’ also made a decision to pay visits to the two leaders of the island, the United Nations representative and the European Union representatives before the 21st of Mart meeting which is expected to place between President Talat and Mr. Hristofyas.
