Tin barbeques made in Cyprus

Postby crushtot » Thu Feb 28, 2008 8:29 pm

Hello Forum
the last time I was in Cyprus about 10 years ago, there was a small backstreet tin shop who used to make brilliant barbecues that would take a battery operated spit or souvlaki sticks.
It was either in Limassol or Larnaka, I can't remember I'm afraid.

Does anyone know, if they are still available, how I can source a couple of these and get them sent to the UK?

Or alternatively of course, is there someone in the UK already importing them?

Any pointers would be gratefully received.

Cheers

They still make them by the old castle in Limassol. They are £20 for a med size,£35 large.Or you can have a custom made one, larger smaller.
Importing I am not sure.Shipping would be easier, but you need a contact on the island.

We had one back in the UK ..... which my Scottish hubby adores ...... and I was amazed how many of our middle class British friends enquired about it. One (who lives in a Manor) is coming out to buy one in Cyprus :D .

But have a look in any of the Greek Cypriot shops between Green Lanes and Crouch End ...... a few stock them.

I am GC and think they look too utilitarian ...... but everyone who is into serious BBQs seems to rave about them ...

I bought mine in Nicosia a few years ago. Cost about £35 and the proprietor wrapped up the box so I could check it in as luggage on the flight back. The box took a bit of a beating, but the barbeque made it back in top shape.

Although I got questioned about it at customs and were shocked to see the three foot long skewers! You should've seen the look on the guy's face. But, there are three or four international flights arriving at JFK at around the same time - flights from Turkey are known for people sneaking in fruit and flights from the Netherlands are known for people sneaking in some weed. They have bigger things to deal with than some guy bringing a barbeque from England.

I will say, though, that a lot of the Greek places around here that sell them tend to charge a lot - $250-400. They might be more pricey now that the American Peso has dropped so much. Take a holiday in Cyprus and bring one back with you...my opinion, anyway.

Make sure you buy direct from a GC supplier ... you don't want to fatten those middle-men any more! :D

I won't use anything other than these galvanised steel Cypriot bbqs. One of the best Cypriot inventions. The battery operated motors are just about OK, but I would recommend a 240v mains motor. I have had mine for years. I have been told that these motors are not available in GB for safety reasons but well worth getting one from the old country.
