Apartment required & learning Greek in Cyprus

Postby sal » Thu Feb 28, 2008 6:50 pm

Geia people

After much deliberating I have decided to continue my study of the Greek language in Cyprus (my Greek teacher in the UK is originally from Athens and she's going crazy because I will get a Cypriot accent! )

Anyway, I just wondered whether there were any courses or programmes that ran any time from April (or later) through until latest November?

Also, I am looking to rent an apartment for min.6 months - East side of the island pref - either Ammochostos or East Larnaca area (I have many friends in Cyprus who live this area that influenced my decision of where to stay.)

Am so so grateful to anyone who has any information for me.

There are many places that teach Greek but if you want to be in a class with others then you might have to wait until a new course starts. But if you know some Greek already then maybe you can just start from the middle of a course. And I don't think you can get the Cypriot accent!! If you learn a language when you are adult already then it is almost impossible to learn to speak in the native accent. So you are destined to speak Greek with an English accept ;)

Yes there is, the government here provide greek lesson at a very reasonble price. I believe it is 33 pounds per year. I know, sounds cheap, but it is mostly government funded. Unfortunatly people in the Ammoxosto district, get less government funding and therefore I am not sure if the governement would be providing greek lessons there. Go the the job center and ask them, they will provide you with telephone numbers and so forth of people willing to help you. The lessons tend to be filled with non-nationals, and a few British Cypriots (only a few). Anyway hope this has helped you.

Massive thanks to both Sotos and Sega for your kind help! :-)

If anyone else knows of any Greek language courses that would be great. I have details about one at the university of Cyprus in Nicosia but it is only a month long course in August and I would like to do more than that.

Shame I can't pick up the Cyprus accent - I love it! :-) I can still pick up the 'sayings' at least.

And still interested to hear about any apartments in the East side of Cyprus that may be up for renting long term.

Well, from start of May until around October-November I would imagine. Maybe a little more - maybe a little less.
That fit with their plans?
