Cypriot Zeitgeist Under Threat ......

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Postby RichardB » Sun Mar 02, 2008 6:07 pm

Maybe I'm just being thick (again)

But surely any immigrant, be they Brit, Russian, Polish or whatever nationality would have moved to Cyprus to improve their zeitgeist, lifestyle whatever you decide to call it.

When I move over permanently it will be to improve my lifestyle.

Now I could go on to mention everything that I think will improve regards my lifestyle in Cyprus but most of these things have been covered in other threads.

Likewise I could draw up a list of things that I would like to improve in Cyprus but that is not what the thread is about.

Maybe I just dont get it but I cant for the life of me see why someone would want to move to another country if their lifestyle was not going to improve.

Maybe thats why there has been little written on the thread as to why say for example the British Lifestyle is better than the Cypriot.

People's nature is the same wherever you go ... there are the same proportion of cruel people everywhere.

Cypriots are no more cruel than anybody else ... those of you who have been saying they are ... are "racists".

The lifestyle changes that were being branded about by various members (who I know are slowly changing their tack .. good they are learning) ...... are to emotionally blackmail Cypriots into giving up nurturing orphans and the elderly so that they spend more time looking after animals.

As a Biologist ... my priorities lie with animals.

Humans are animals too.

Human nature changes according to its environment.
Therefore, create a healthy environment and you may reduce any inherent cruelty (or you may increase it :? ). ... however I predict the former.

I think we all agree Cyprus is already a healthier environment than the UK.

So what is it that needs to change?

Perhaps the way stray and abused animals are cared for needs looking at?
Animal shelters / Charities may be adding to the problem .... if people absolve responsibility to them. After all this is how the problem was tackled in the UK and now these Charities are big business because they have created the conditions for their own survival.

Perhaps the easy availability of animals as pets needs to be curbed? ... I was shocked to find out yesterday, a Husky costs only 200 Euros to buy.

Suggestions?

Although there must be people that buy dogs in pet shops and then find they can’t look after them I don’t believe it is the main issue here in Cyprus. Perhaps bucksboy can tell us what proportion of their current residents are purebreds and what are ‘bitsas’?

It seems to me that Cypriots do not believe in neutering their animals and the resulting offspring are just dumped in the hope that some expat will take care of the situation for them.

I believe that it is in part then self-sustaining – the animals are dumped, the majority are adopted or carted off to homes which means the problem magically goes away – unless you go and visit the homes with hundreds of abandoned dogs and cats of course. Out of sight is out of mind…

I don’t think the problem will be solved until the expat community stops ‘solving’ the problem or perhaps even better takes the dumped animals to the village office and makes it their problem.

Cyprusgrump,
I have no idea what proprtion of dogs are purebreed or mongrels. I would guess however that most are mongrels. We don't have the staff or time to be able to enquire into such details and treat every dog just as "a dog".
You are correct in assuming that Cypriots do not like to get their dogs neutered and often find boxes of puppies dumped at the side of the road and particularly in the gardens of foreigner's houses. I used to think it was because the Cypriots too mean to spend money on neutering but now believe additionally, it is a question of (as you say) out of sight, out of mind. Dump the puppies and you don't have to worry about them anymore.

I don't ever see the time when the expat community will stop caring for animals as the concept of animal care is entrenched in most indigenous Britons. I guess you could see this as part of our way of life.

.... anyone venture a nugget? :D

So why is your Zeitgeist better than Cypriot Zeitgeist?

Oracle,
It depends what your lifestyle is. Can you enlarge and tell us with your experience what comprises the Cypriot lifestyle? :)

Bucksboy .... you're just passing the buck! :D

I set the question, you are the guest: now answer .... if you can?

Oracle,

I never pass the buck. And I don't EVER respond to commands.
Now Oracle, perhaps you should jump down from your throne and enlighten us all about the Cypriot way of life dear.

Moi? Commanding? ...... must be the Cypriot in me coming out

Bucksboy ... you reside here :?

..... Go out and live the Cypriot way of life :D

For those with ultra short-term, cognitive storage abilities, it is recommended to use the quote facility to carry over the flow of exchanges.

You left it behind, here it is:

OK? ... I was replying to that. Clear?

Now, I am a little more concerned about your fear of "red" .... and your rather, manically fetish, over-reaction and inappropriate example.

(Notes on favoured words by BB: Saints, red, veins, cardinal, knickers, animals)

Do they leave you alone with those poor, defenseless animals at the shelter, I wonder :(

My My St. Oracle,
You have such a latino temper. So easy to have you firing on all four cylinders dear.
Yes, indeed they do leave me alone with poor Cypriot creatures. Do you want to complain about that too?
And yes, you should reply then to my lost question.
All those red letters and huge blocks of text. Are you trying to say something?
