Those of my compatriots who often state that cruelty to animals also exists in the UK fail to see the difference . The "system" in the UK not only comes abhors such acts it also has in place laws governing cruelty to animals , and such vile acts are committed by " criminal" elements and the mentally unstable , where in Cyprus such acts are committed by otherwise sensible and reasonable people who fail to see anything wrong in mistreating their animals. Education is working , the Brits and Charlies ( English Cypriots ) are contributing a great deal towards educating and changing outdated perceptions of animals.
Back to the Cypriot way of life , I think the family strong links are admirable , the fact that the parents consider it their duty to provide for their children , not having to be forced by legal means , hospitality and integrity form a great aspect of the overall Cypriot way of life. I'm lucky I can take the good from the British way of life and the good from the Cypriot way of life !!!
Miltiades,
I'm certain you are right that animal welfare has improved over the years and I would like to think (with Oracle's permission!) that this is in some way due to the British influence. There is still a long way to go but as you say, this comes about with education and I hope that the new shelter in Paphos will be able to assist in this. Some however may see this influence as meddling and imposing our will on foreigners but where do you draw the line? Our main purpose is to relieve the suffering of animals and if this brings about change, then so be it. In this case, it is for the best surely?
As for the Cypriot way of life I too think the strong family links etc. are admirable and I see family life in the UK gradually being eroded by various factors but of course, the majority of British families display little differences to Cypriot families in the way they look after their children and old folk. Just look at the families on holiday in Paphos....the majority behave impeccably. I do however slightly disagree about integrity among some Cypriots and property developers/lawyers in particular but I don't want to open up another can of worms.
Thanks for your support....we need more like you at the "PAWS" dog shelter!
