In 1988 when I arrived for the First time in Cyprus, My passport was stamped in RED INK, that, this person is FORBIDDEN to do any work , either paid or VOLUNTARY.
We saw driving around old ladies, bent double dressed in black working on the roads, up to their elbows in Tar while the young Cypriot guy sat in the cabin of the truck. These poor old dears were the widows of people who did not have a pension.
I asked about them in a taverna and was told that they are not as old as you think, they are mostly in their 50's
That is my age NOW. !!!
Purdey has started a ball rolling, to help PAWS animal shelter. Come on you guys, you can make a difference this year.

LETS MAKE IT COOL TO SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The local schools here in the North have projects such as cleaning up the rubbish on beaches, and picnic areas. They also have odd days a year where they help to tidy up the towns as well. Where the turtles nest and lay eggs - there are many, many volunteers including students (a LOT of them Cypriot) to keep a vigle over these rare creatures - so its not unheard of by any means. as for community service - (law-breakers) no, I haven't heard of this.

from a previous posting, I have also discovered that there are very few-to-none orphanges in CY. I was told you take care of your own.
I would assume that would be the same for old folks homes.
I also asked once about volunteering in hospitals, and was told that is not allowed as well. Judging from the amount of trash i saw on my recent visit, it appears they don't volunteer to clean up thier communities either.

So where do the Cypriots do thier Community Services? Where do they volunteer thier time for a better community?

GorillaGal,
Wow, what a difference to be able to live here with clean streets and the sight of NO abandoned washing machines or cars.
I do know of hospital volunteers in Paphos who go around to visit the sick but I think it is Brits who do it. There is also that wonderful cancer support group who visit the terminally ill cancer patients in their homes. Not sure if it's all over the Island but it's certainly in the Paphos area and once again, they too have charity shops in Polis & Paphos for donations etc.

I see on the news sometimes groups of schookids who clean up the beaches but I don't think it's done regularly. They make a huge difference when they do it though.

Schools, the army, various organisations, they all organise projects to clean areas, plant trees or other activities like that.

GG has accused Cypriots of being lazy but in my opinion its the opposite. All the people I know between the ages of 23-40 work on average from 8am-6pm. I personally work from 8am-8pm and once or twice a week until 10pm.
So for you guys it might be easy to sacrifice an hour of your day to do something good like that, but if you expect me to go pick up garbage from the beach at 8pm then call me lazy, but I aint moving from the couch. :?
