MOLLER SAYS UN MISSION WILL GAIN SPAHE BY THE END OF MARCH
The United Nations Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller has been received by President Mehmet Ali Talat.
At the end of the meeting, Mr Moller told reporters that the UN mission will gain its shape by the end of March or at the beginning of April.
On the opening of Lokmacı, he said that new developments are expected on the issue in the week.
Mr Moller has been holding bilateral contacts with the two leaders on the island since Friday with the aim of setting a date for a leaders’ meeting.
[b]This morning’s meeting between President Talat and Mr Moller is the second in less than a week.[/b]
The meeting at the Presidential Palace started at half past ten and lasted about 40 minutes.
Speaking at the end of the meeting, Mr Moller told reporters that the UN mission would gain its shape by the end of March or at the beginning of April.
“I am going back-and-forth to make sure everyone agrees”, he said,
adding that both leaders are eager to work towards a solution.
Responding to a question on the opening of a gate at Lokmacı, he said that he is very optimistic about the opening of a gate at the point.
“I cannot give an exact date on the issue as this is something to be done by the two municipalities together” he said, adding that the opening is expected to gain a certainty this week.
Responding to a question on the opening of Yesilırmak Gate, Mr Moller said the issue was not discussed during the meeting but added that the Greek Cypriot Administration did not raise the opening of the gate as a precondition for the opening of a gate at Lokmacı.
Yesterday, Mr Moller met with the Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias.Mr Moller told reporters at the end of the meeting that President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Dimitris Christofias could meet in the second half of March and added that he would be making the preparations for that meeting.
It will be the first meeting between President Talat and the Greek-Cypriot leader since Christofias won presidential elections on the 24th of February in South Cyprus.
