Am I old fashioned ?

Postby purdey » Wed Feb 27, 2008 1:15 pm

A few weeks ago I interviewed 7 people for a job in Cyprus. The job is mainly office based with some appointments out of office.
Today I recieved a rude letter from one candidate who never got the job.The guy was highly qualified, answered all the right questions, spoke three languages and would have been a assett in the workplace.
However he arrives at interview ten minutes late, was dressed in a unironed shirt, dirty trousers and looked unkempt. On appearance only he did not get the job.
I gave the job to a lady who was well presented, who was not qualified and only spoke one language but was prepared to learn another.

Purdey, did you promptly reply to the six others about their unsuccessful application?
Since this lady was prepared to learn another language wasn't it possible for the other to be prepared to improve his appearance? Which would be much easier then learning a language.
Answer to your question: I don't think being old fashioned has anything to do with your decision.

I think I would have told him that if he could be bothered to go home and clean himself up he could return for another interview and see how he responded. No I don't think you are being old-fashioned.

In my book first impressions count. At interview I expect a shirt and tie, from men and smart dress from women.
All those who were unsuccessful received a telephone call 24 hrs later with feedback on why they did not get the job.

gotta agree on this one. first impression is everything. besides, look at the guy's response to not getting the job. looks like he has some kind of anger issues.

I was waiting for that one. From what I can gather the lady is happily married, and fosters children,I think if memory serves 12 in the past sixteen years.
I am afraid I am one of the boring one's,no wandering eye,or time for other female company...
Why should I feel guilty ?

Of course first impressions count. The best chef I ever employed looked like bloody hippie (a clean one), I had to take him on as he was the only applicant. My point is that if someone is a qualified as this person appeared to be you could have bent your own rule a little, if he had cleaned himself up as suggested he would be demonstrating a willingness to meet your standards of dress and obey orders.
