In case of a solution, will settlers vote in a referendum?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

In an ordinary election (local, regional, national/partliamentary, presidential) any citizen of the EU who is resident in another EU country has the right to vote. But a referendum is not necessarily an 'ordinary' election. (Of course the Annan referendum was pre-EU membership) It will be interesting to see if non-Cypriot EU citizens are eligible to vote in any future referendum.

As far as I am aware non-national EU citizens did indeed have a right to vote in the referenda on the so-called EU 'constitution'. What will be the case for Cyprus ?

There is a fair amount of discretion given to EU countries about voting rights granted to residents of EU countries who are not nationals. Greece allows no voting of non nationals. Britain allows all legal residents who register as voters to vote. It will take years to agree on an EU wide practice for this.

In any case, settlers are not legal residents in any sense. They are in CYprus as the result of a foreign country's acts and there is even a great amount of dispute within the TC community istelf about their presence.

Allowing settlers to vote will undermine any agreement before it even gets to first base. Those who cannot see this are either not Cypriots or are suffering from a huge mental block. We might as well let the settlers on one side and the Pontians on the other to vote all by themselves to settle the problem and be done with it.

My guess is once bitten twice shy...there will not be any future referanda regarding any final solution...If there is going to be a solution it will be imposed from the top... :( :(

Bir,

No GC politician will dare sign away land rights without the cover of a referendum. Christofias has stated this much several times during his campaign. It is the only way to legalise a settlement, and the only way to silence the opponents.
