I am interested in a comment " a barrier to angels entering your house". Is this part of the scriptures or one of those old wives tails ? We have many in the U.K. , My Grandma believed that angels came in the form of wild birds entering your house, and that they were sent to collect a soul from that house. (She was 94 when she died)

My dear CC , it is a common knowledge that in some parts of Asia , Bangladesh , Pakistan and a number of others , dogs MUST not UNDER any circumstances enter the house. These are not old wives tales but a part of life for those who believe in the Almighty !! Nonsense and primitive beliefs as far as I'm concerned , but such beliefs are widespread amongst the so called British Asians , I therefore when mentioning the British I make a distinction between the native Brits and the British passport holders , vast difference , unfortunately not recognised by the our politicians simply because out politicians , bless their cotton socks , are too busy fiddling their expense claim forms , and if not doing this they are far too involved in their favourite past time of feathering ....

All I asked about , was the thing about angels not entering a house when there was a dog there. and I wondered where it came from, you seem to have taken offence where NONE was meant .I gave you an example of a superstition which was common in Yorkshire where my family came from.
I was not making any racial attack at all, as it happens I find these quaint old sayings from ANY country interesting and I wonder if they have actually a scientific fact.

CC , I never took any offence , what gave you this idea !! I was merely being informative , I would not for a second post details on something that is either fictitious or racist in content.
There are many aspects surrounding the "British " Asians that we know nothing about in the UK , I was just mentioning the fact that dogs kept in homes are considered a barrier when Angels are sent down to earth to collect expired souls !!!! Or it soles !!

I seem to remember that is unlucky to put shoes on a table as that too is a sign of a death in the family, although what shoes , table and death have got to do with things I do not know.

Maybe someone has a book that could answer these questions ?

In the old days when shoes were made to last, and not many poor people had shoes to wear anyway, on a departure, the worldly posessions were placed on a table and the posessions were divided. Among the most valuable were shoes. So shoes on a table does signify death. Please dont ask where I heard that from. It was sooo long ago.

Denizaksulu,

That is interesting, I assumed that it was something to do with the laying out of a corpse after death.
I know my Gran would throw a wobbler if someone did that.

Sinestre being left in Latin hence ,sinister meaning bad. By doing that, so they say you blind the devil .
Angels are supposed to sit on your right hand shoulder.

My angel is here, I can feel him helping me type even though I have work to do!!!!!!
Better get going then, but just before I do, what was the saying about black cats bringing you bad luck - and why? Is this another reference to the devil?

Cheers

in some cultures, the black cat brings good luck. in others, it is just the act of the black cat crossing one's path that brings bad luck.
