I am interested in a comment " a barrier to angels entering your house". Is this part of the scriptures or one of those old wives tails ? We have many in the U.K. , My Grandma believed that angels came in the form of wild birds entering your house, and that they were sent to collect a soul from that house. (She was 94 when she died)

My dear CC , it is a common knowledge that in some parts of Asia , Bangladesh , Pakistan and a number of others , dogs MUST not UNDER any circumstances enter the house. These are not old wives tales but a part of life for those who believe in the Almighty !! Nonsense and primitive beliefs as far as I'm concerned , but such beliefs are widespread amongst the so called British Asians , I therefore when mentioning the British I make a distinction between the native Brits and the British passport holders , vast difference , unfortunately not recognised by the our politicians simply because out politicians , bless their cotton socks , are too busy fiddling their expense claim forms , and if not doing this they are far too involved in their favourite past time of feathering ....

All I asked about , was the thing about angels not entering a house when there was a dog there. and I wondered where it came from, you seem to have taken offence where NONE was meant .I gave you an example of a superstition which was common in Yorkshire where my family came from.
I was not making any racial attack at all, as it happens I find these quaint old sayings from ANY country interesting and I wonder if they have actually a scientific fact.

Not sure if it was an angel, but we too had this myth that if a wild bird entered your house, death would soon follow....................??

...but the bird had to be a black one. (usually the crow family) Poor birds, they are so maligned and yet they have a wonderful social organisation. If we had the ravens sense of justice, there would be no CyProb.

Not necessarily a black bird Deniz. I remember my mother flying around the house after a poor little sparrow that had dared enter the house via the bathroom window!! Do not worry, she/he managed to escape via the back door!!

Good suggestion for CyProb. If only..........................

Another one was the pinch of salt, if you spilt salt it was considered to be the work of the Devil as salt at one time was very expensive and ,indeed as you know was at one time used as currency, If you spilt salt you were supposed to take a pinch with the right hand and throw it over the left shoulder where the devil was supposed to sit. Sinestre being left in Latin hence ,sinister meaning bad. By doing that, so they say you blind the devil .
Angels are supposed to sit on your right hand shoulder.

My angel is here, I can feel him helping me type even though I have work to do!!!!!!
Better get going then, but just before I do, what was the saying about black cats bringing you bad luck - and why? Is this another reference to the devil?

Cheers

I think it is something to do with witches, and the cat being the familar of the devil I cannot remember which is which but, if it crosses from one side it is unlucky, ( Probably the Left) and if it crosses from the Right it is lucky although I am not 100% on that.

I seem to remember that is unlucky to put shoes on a table as that too is a sign of a death in the family, although what shoes , table and death have got to do with things I do not know.

Maybe someone has a book that could answer these questions ?
