Is animal cruelty in Cyprus the norm.

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

I do not think that all Cypriots are cruel, some are, but I do not believe that a lot of it is intentional. What I mean is, locking a dog in a small enclosure is usually done for practical purposes, maybe they cannot afford to enclose their garden fully, maybe the dog would attach sheep / Goats / chickens if let out. Of course the ones who blind, maime or perform an act of DELIBERATE cruelty are despicable. Whist waiting in the vets for my dogs worming tablets last year, a lady (TC) came out of the examination room with a beautiful (well groomed) alsation. I petted it and admired it and then watched as she proceeded to the car park, and put the dog IN THE BOOT, slammed it shut and drove off!!! Unbelievable - BUT, not I think deliberately cruel. I think education and leading perhaps by example will eventually change peoples attitudes, but if I were a Cypriot I would not be happy if someone (a foreigner) tarred me and all of my fellow Cypriots with the same brush.

Rational post Tess.

Whilst in the UK speaking to animal rescue volunteers, they would exclaim disbelief at the extent of the cruelty they saw.

But at no point did they ever assume a racial connotation as in "Why are British people so cruel to animals, because we have so many cases we are struggling financially to care for them!"

So why is it acceptable to emphasise this cruelty as though it were "norm" in Cyprus when it is a worldwide problem?

The animals come first, people's personal agendas and gripes should not enter into it if you are really looking for a solution.

Don't faint with the shock Oracle, but I think we actually agree on something  As for cruelty in Britain, again, there is DELIBERATE cruelty and also cruelty caused by ignorance. For example, tying a firework to a dogs tail, deliberate cruelty. An old lady with over 70 cats - all living in the house covered in faeces etc and half starved - because she couldn't cope - both cruel but in different ways............

What exactly was it in my post on this subject that so offended you oracle?I had no hidden agenda, was merely stating facts.Animal cruelty is world wide, which does not mean that I am a racist!I treat everyone how I would wish to be treated regardless of who they are or where they come from. The amount of hatred in this forum has caused me to come in infrequently and make few posts. This being a perfect example. It used to be a nice place for people to ask nice questions and have healthy debates, but is now reduced itself to personal attacks and racist hatred. If you cannot see the good in people, then I feel sorry for you.

Ignore her!! It's just her 'way' bless her. There are many more people who appreciate your answers so really don't take it too seriously. 8)

Beverley it is not personal with Phoenix just the norm. She has rather a poor reputation at starting and inflicting damming remarks against people, cultures.
I would like to see her spend a few sessions with a anger management consultant, who could then report back to the forum with their findings.

Niki and Purdey, many thanks for your posts.I tend not to take it personally as I am gifted with more intelligence than those who need to hurt and inflict their nastiness on others! Hope all is still working out well for you in Cyprus Nikki,we still miss it,but know we cannot afford to come back until my husband retires with his pension.UK earthquake caught me sitting on the loo!!!What a scary experience, wondered what the hell it was!Never thought of an earthquake so was very surprised when I put the TV on next morning!

This is the offending article:
beverly10 wrote:Sadly, animal cruelty is a world wide problem. All meditteranean countries are the same as are all African and asian countries.Wherever you go in underdeveloped countries you see animals in the most appalling state of neglect.I spent 7 years working in Morrocco and the state of the beasts of burden was sickening.Trying to tell them that their horses, donkeys, asses etc would last longer if they looked after them fell on deaf ears! The chinese eat their dogs and cats, so what is worse? In the UK we have afair amount of cruelty to animals,so to say all Cypriots neglect their animals is not only untru but unfair. They certainly need to be prosecuted for real cruelty as They in the UK are when caught but poison seems to only happen to the Ex pats animals not the noisy non stop barking Cypriot ones!

You start of bland enough to rope in the unwary ... and then it is an endless racist tirade.
Look in your heart beverly10.
Mitigate your personal agenda.
You only stand to improve.
Good luck.
We are in this together.

Who would have thought it!! An earthquake in the UK!

I hope it all works out for you soon. It's worth waiting for. The weather is wonderful at the moment and the carnival celebrations are in full swing. The colours and costumes are fantastic. :D
