About 7,500 years before Egyptians, a surprising find in Cyprus
By Marsha Walton

Archeologists discovered the grave of a human, the circular skeleton seen at the top of the image, and a cat just inches away.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Archeologists say they have evidence that a bond between cats and humans was forged thousands of years before previously thought.

An elaborate Neolithic burial site uncovered in the Shillourokambos settlement on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus reveals that the friendship between cats and humans may go back 9,500 years. Prior to the discovery, Egyptians were thought to be the first to keep cats as pets, around 2,000 to 1,900 BC.

"We don't know if the human was a male or a female, but we do know that he or she had a special status in society," said Jean -Denis Vigne, vice president of the Scientific Council of the Museum of Natural History in Paris.

The cat was the Felis silvestris species, a wildcat, a bit larger than modern domestic cats. It was about eight months old when it died.

Researchers found many items not often found in other graves, including flints, a small green stone axe, and two dozen shells. The cat skeleton was just 15 inches from the human skeleton. Vigne said the animal skeleton showed no sign of having been butchered, and its proximity to the human suggested some respect or reverence. It is possible, he said, that the cat was killed to accompany the human in the afterworld.... But he said the burial find in Cyprus indicates that the relationship between cats and people involved spiritual links.

What happened then to make the cat so neglected now?

Niki

it is just a matter of perception...

Things are more transparent here... less likely for anyone to get away with anything.

It's the same the whole world over .. but Cyprus is so small no one can get away with anything ..... unlike the home of the 60 Million ... UK! etc

Cheshire Cat, its not that anyone wants you to go, its just that you have people confused and they are giving you an alternative.

You live in France, you are not a Cypriot, You hate the country and its people, Cypriots can do no good in your eyes, you have been stung by a DODGY agent as you say, yet you keep coming back for more

I would have thought you would have had enough of Cyprus and the Cypriots not to want anything to do with them. Its just so confusing

Just a thought!

Time for me to put matters RIGHT as far animal cruelty goes in Cyprus.

Firstly let me start by saying that animal cruelty has greatly diminished , and animal welfare has greatly increased since my childhood in Cyprus and thanks to the British , amongst them my own family of Brits , who have spoken out against mindless cruelty to animals . When I was a kid growing up Cyprus I was cruel to birds , animals , cats and dogs without really knowing that my actions were wrong. As I find my self now watching and enjoying the birds in my garden my mind goes back to days when the only way I enjoyed a bird was by killing it with my catapult , a hobby that ALL Cypriots of my generation participated in as well as stoning every dog that you came across . The reality of the matter is that we have now moved on , and just as the English of 100 years ago who used to feed the lions at London Zoo with live cats , we have come to abhor cruelty to animals.
Cruelty to animals in the UK and the USA is committed by brainless morons , where in Cyprus although not institutionalised is nevertheless ignored and at times brushed aside.
I have noticed many a young couple in Cyprus with their poodle and other pedigree dogs that look well cared for , but there are still numerous people who think nothing of putting little kittens in a bag laden with stones and chucking them in the sea !! Such cruelty is a disgrace and all civilized Cypriots must condemn such barbaric behaviour towards the helpless , I hope Phoenix is listening !!

I do note HATE anyone or anything,
I am not confused , anyone else confused ?

SO, what you say is if I am correct, we can do what we want to you, you must not complain.

You are obviously Cypriot, but this is an English speaking site, surely if you do not want to speak to The Dreaded Brits you would go to a Greek site.

Do not get me wrong Oracle, I do respect you , and your rights to freedom of speach ,but you must respect other peoples, Including we foriegners.

To be honest I don't much sympathise with dogs, but I accept other animals. We have three in our neighbourhood and they keep me up all night, the have contents who has the biggest bark.

Anyway, the answer to your question is, yes, it is the normal. An animal is similar to a child, you need to wash it, walk it, educate it, feed it, and basically monitor them. Have you noticed how children in Cyprus are kept under control?

Why are you implicating me?

Unlike you, I do not eat mammals....

Unlike you, I make sure Charity money does not go towards animal vivisection....

Unlike you, I know people are the same wherever you go...

Unlike you, I am not jumping on the bandwagon to accuse one "race" just because it would make me feel high and mighty...

I was raised in Cyprus by a dad that kept a pig as a pet until it died of natural causes ...

.... and a mum that kept chickens just for eggs because she could not bare to kill any of them.

Not everyone fits your stereotype Miltiades ... just because you want to be a Brit now.

Cyprus is a small country where actions are transparent ... it works for good and unfortunately for bad ...

But ..... I will remind you ... Cypriots have kept pets for longer than anyone else:

Oracle, you don't think that person might have choked to death while eating the cat? :)
