I seem to remember that is unlucky to put shoes on a table as that too is a sign of a death in the family, although what shoes , table and death have got to do with things I do not know.

Maybe someone has a book that could answer these questions ?

In the old days when shoes were made to last, and not many poor people had shoes to wear anyway, on a departure, the worldly posessions were placed on a table and the posessions were divided. Among the most valuable were shoes. So shoes on a table does signify death. Please dont ask where I heard that from. It was sooo long ago.

So I was right saying that the angels came down to collect the soles !!!

Nice one Miltiades. Especially for one whose God is Bacchus.

A lover of fine (and expensive? wine!) Me too! :) :)

Bacchus was the god of wine. He was accompanied by Maenads, or wild dancing women !! I have had the wine but missed on the wild women , or if they turned up I was highly innebriated to have noticed !!

I know about Baccus but not Maenads!

Whilst in the UK speaking to animal rescue volunteers, they would exclaim disbelief at the extent of the cruelty they saw.

But at no point did they ever assume a racial connotation as in "Why are British people so cruel to animals, because we have so many cases we are struggling financially to care for them!"

So why is it acceptable to emphasise this cruelty as though it were "norm" in Cyprus when it is a worldwide problem?

The animals come first, people's personal agendas and gripes should not enter into it if you are really looking for a solution.

Don't faint with the shock Oracle, but I think we actually agree on something  As for cruelty in Britain, again, there is DELIBERATE cruelty and also cruelty caused by ignorance. For example, tying a firework to a dogs tail, deliberate cruelty. An old lady with over 70 cats - all living in the house covered in faeces etc and half starved - because she couldn't cope - both cruel but in different ways............

Tessin....Just got this from KAR. Its just sick. I'd say shoot the bastards (the humans).

Subject: Poison alert

Hello

We wanted to let you know that one of our lovely rescue dogs, Sandy, was poisoned on Feb 9th by strychnine laced in a bread sandwich and thrown into our garden in Ozankoy at night - the 2nd time this has happened (the 1st was in May 2007 and was strychnine on lumps of chicken) and the third dog we have lost to poison in 9 months. There was also one sandwich left on the pavement outside our neighbour's which killed a cat, as well as another lot in our garden which, thankfully, our other dog did not find. Even a dose of atropine given to Sandy immediately & the fantastic care of Sibel from Pet Life could not save her.

Then, last Saturday 23rd Feb, we were walking on Alagadi beach (the smaller one) and our 'survivor', Rosie, found a lump of bone & skin laced with poison. Fortunately the atropine we always carry worked this time & gave her enough time for us to get to Sibel's where she and Emma again gave wonderful care and saved her for the 3rd time - and she's still only 14 months.

We're now having extra fencing (and it's already high) and security lights fitted round the house & are even more careful about where we walk, though it's hard not to be neurotic. We do hope your petition and canvassing is successful soon so no more innocent pets and strays are killed. Meanwhile, many thanks for publicising where the recent attacks are and for all the work you do to help the dogs and cats. The only consolation we have in all this is that we were able to give a happy if short life to 3 puppies, and were rewarded many times over, though it's hard to get rid of the memories of their horrific deaths.

Helen and David Cox, Ozankoy

Can anyone identify this low life and take action against him in the south ?

Maybe it was in the North and the GC tourist assumed the donkey was Turkish :? (ok ok I was only joking)

I'm sure they'd be able to find his DNA around the donkeys whiskers for the prosecutors.

How sad that such cruelty to animals exists in all parts of the World and not just South Cyprus.
