Today a communist was elected democratically, something that shows that nobody is excluded based on his ideology and anybody can get the top spot as long as they have the support of the majority of the people.
The person that we elected today was born in a small village near Kerynia in a very poor family. The father of Christofias was a construction worker. This shows that Democracy in Cyprus does not discriminate people based on their "class" or wealth either.
And although a Communist won, the democratic system of Cyprus guarantees that democracy will continue, and that those citizens that didn't vote for Christofias will be equal to those that did.
Now that Christofias is the President, and if Marcos Kyprianou returns from Brussels to become the foreign minister, we will probably see Marios Karoyian, the president of DIKO and member of the Armenian minority, becoming the President of the Parliament. Democracy in Cyprus does not discriminate people based on their ethnic group either.
This is the democracy that everybody has to protect and improve even further. I hope that Turkish Cypriots will abandon their divisive and racist demands and became part of a truly united, European and truly democratic Cyprus. Thats the only way for peace and for a better future for all Cypriots.
