Can I just add during my time in Cyprus I did a fair bit of charity work in Cyprus, I did it because I cared not for praise or a thank you but for the love of Children in Cyprus.

GG, I would like to thank you for all the toys you have brought all the way from the US of A to the uncivilized Cyprus for our animals. Please also give a little thought to the 30-60 million stray cats of USA and the thousands being gassed or given lethal injections every day. I personally don't give to any animal charity In Cyprus, instead I give to the children and cancer charities.

Now you're talking, the children and the elders must always come first, they should be our priority.

i didn't think the children or the elders suffered in CY....recently i inquired about orpahnages, and the consensous was that there few few to none as the cypriots take care of thier own. i would assume that goes for the elders as well.

you should read the cover story on the new national geographic magazine about how intelligent animals are. then you might think twice before they got abused or neglected, and when they did, you might just prosecute.

The children and elders don't suffer because we care for them more then we do for the animals (unlike some other countries). There are though still a lot of sick children and cancer patients in our hospitals who need all the support we can give.
Please don't lecture me on animal cleverness. I have had pets all my life(currently a dog and a cat) and I love animals (I will even catch a cockroach and take it out in the fields rather then kill it) but we have to get our priorities right.

Kafenes,

Why bother to reply then on an animal welfare issue? Your priorities are obviosly elsewhere. I was going to suggest that because you live in Paphos, you might like to break with tradition and actually do something as a Cypriot by helping us at the new "PAWS" dog shelter. That would be too much to ask I guess as you are so busy with your other charitable work with children & the elderly and spending so so much time berating the foreigners that actually do something to help here, a problem that is basically generated by the Cypriots themselves. What about a word of appreciation instead of all the animosity.

Don't bash people if you are asking for help.

You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

The type of people who abuse animals, abuse the young and old too ... so if someone like Kafenes is caring towards sick and unfortunate people, you can bet 100% that he is not the type to harm lower animals.

You are picking on the wrong person.

Now, lecture over .......

Where is this "PAWS" ? .....

..... Ditto!

We used to have great fun trying to catch mice every time we opened up our house after a long absence. Then we used to go up the field to release them ... unfortunately they would get back home before we did ....

I have always thought of Kafenes as a caring and honest man! Just look at the picture he posted - such a cutie!

Oracle,
This post is about animal welfare and not the human kind. If Kafenes is concerned so much about the elderly or young in Cyprus then he ought to post a new topic.
I am not asking for his help either but merely SUGGESTING that he MIGHT like to help and don't be fooled into assuming that everybody who is concerned and helps kids or the elderly is necessarily kindly towards animals. That assumption just doesn't ring true. I am not, of course suggesting that Kafenes is anything else other than the wonderful person you make him out to be.

Where is this "PAWS" as you so eloquently & politely put it is very near to Paphos airport. From Paphos, travel on the new highway and exit at the 1st exit for the airport. Follow signs for airport until you reach the "T" junction with the old Limassol road. Turn left and IMMEDIATELY right and follow the farm road for about 1/2km. You will see the green roof of the new shelter in front of you.
The shelter is staffed by volunteers every day of the year and is open to the public from about 7am to 11.30am.
I will next be there on Friday this week and look forward to seeing you and possibly Kafenes as well if you both can make it. We are in constant need of help and of course funding as we rely almost solely on charitable donations to help us run the place. It is a very expensive exercise. [/b]

However,
The organisation I was with raised an awful lot of money for a Childrens home, It was presented to them, photo's were taken it was a happy event.
Some weeks later, they were approached by us and asked what they had used the money for, they invited a party of us over to the Childrens home, expecting the money to have been used for some form of physio equipment, ( it was a home for physically and mentally disabled). The Party were proudly shown the staff room, which was locked to keep the kids out, in there displayed in all its glory was a brand spanking new state of the art T.V. for the use of the staff only.
We continued to raise money for them, BUT, we would not give them the cash, we asked what the Kids needed and we bought it for them.
