Abandoned puppies

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

i would have done it if i had won the mega lotto ($270million).... animals do not have a care in the world as to what country anyone is from.... they just worry about staying alive.[/quote]

Gorillagal,

I too would give away so much to animal welfare. At the moment like many foreigners in Cyprus, we give our free time and limited financial help.
The point I was making is that it's about time the Cypriots and in particular the Cypriot government changed their apathetic approach to animal neglect on the Island and started allocating funds themselves for the problems caused mainly by themselves. If they can airlift students in from many parts of Europe in order to vote then they can surely allocate some decent funding for looking after abandoned & cruely treated animals.
In my book the latter is very much more important.

I would love to know what the bill was for air lifting all those students just to vote, Most countries can vote online now. How much per head did the taxpayer in Cyprus fork out.

Teens accused of beating disabled woman
By LISA CORNWELL, Associated Press Writer
CINCINNATI - Two teenagers hid overnight in a house and spent more than six hours torturing a disabled woman after her mother left in the morning, authorities said.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said the teenage boy and girl tied up the 18-year-old woman, clubbed her, kicked her, shaved her head and soaked her with water before making her walk barefoot outside in the snow.
They also ignored pleas from the woman, who had undergone brain surgery, not to hit her in the head, investigators said.
"This is one of the worst crimes I've ever seen," Jones said Monday. "They are sick animals, apparently just doing this for kicks and no other reason."
Cheyenne Blanton, 17, and Joseph Nagle, 16, both of Hamilton, were arraigned Monday on juvenile delinquency charges that include aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, kidnapping, felonious assault and vandalism, according to juvenile court officials.
They were ordered held in the county's juvenile detention center pending a court appearance later this week. Neither entered a plea, and both requested court-appointed attorneys. Those attorneys had not been named Monday.
The teens are accused of physically abusing Ashley Clark, 18, for more than six hours Friday at her home in Hanover Township, about 35 miles northwest of Cincinnati.
Both Jones and the woman's mother, Sheila Clark, want the teenagers tried as adults, and Jones said the two could get 75 years to life in prison if tried and convicted as adults.
"I want full justice for my daughter," Clark said Monday. "Those two never need to walk the streets again."
Clark would not comment on details of the case or provide specifics on her daughter's disabilities or injuries, other than to say that her daughter was doing as well as possible.
"I can't understand how anyone could do this to anyone, but especially to someone with such a beautiful, loving heart," Sheila Clark said.
Messages seeking comment on whether adult charges would be pursued were left at the prosecutor's office Monday. There was no answer at telephone listing for a Joseph Nagel in Hamilton. There was no listing for Cheyenne Blanton.
Jones said the teenagers hid overnight in the basement of the Clark home, intending to steal the car and leave town before an upcoming juvenile court appearance date for one of the suspects.
They apparently missed their chance to get the car when Sheila Clark left the house in it Friday morning, and they went into the kitchen to get something to eat before going upstairs and waking her daughter, Jones said. The pair then spent the next six to eight hours torturing Ashley Clark, he said.
The mother realized something had happened when she came home, saw the house ransacked and called 911. A neighbor also called the sheriff's department to report two juveniles in the neighbor's yard.
Detectives apprehended the teenagers a few minutes later in nearby woods after following their footprints in the snow, Jones said.

And here we are blaming the Cypriots for cruelty towards animals.

kafenes,
this is a big country. we have a few more people in it than you do, and not all of them are right in the head. (just look at our president!) this is an unfortunate, sick incident, but for every sicko there are probably hundreds of wonderful, generous, loving americans. at least we haven't gone around killing our own since our civil war. you have a much more recent history. ours ended in a united country, yours ended in a divided country.
and from what i read on this forum, there are still acts of sensless violence amongst your own.
no country is perfect.

Exactly my point, not every Cypriot treat there animals like you make them up to. There are all sorts in all countries. The figures for abandoned animals in the USA is way too high for the population from what I read. In any case what upset me most was your comment
and they call themselves "civilized"!

sorry if i offended you Kafenees.
have you been to USA? how many homeless pets did you see wandering the streets? How many pet shelters do you have in the RoC?
in my recent visit, my heart was borken by how many homeless pets there were. i visited JuneMichaels dog shelter in Limassol, and was moved to tears. it is my understanding that there are only enough shelters in the RoC theat i can count them on one hand. for a country that is only 8 times the size (or is it 6?) of the state of Connecticut, that is pretty sad. i think Connecticut has more than 35 pet shelters. we also have a spay/neuter program. when you adopt a pet, you make a tax-deductable donation, and get a coupon to spay/neuter your pet for free.

Kefenes,
Why keep harping on about cruelty in other countries as if it somehow excuses the Cypriot's their abject cruel ways toward animals in general. What's the point in comparing cruelty in the US or UK when we are dealing with Cyprus.
There are many kind Cypriots as we all know but generally speaking they are a cruel people in that way whereas the population generally in the UK or US has a much kinder & caring approach towards the welfare of animals. I seee cruelty or neglect of animals on an almost daily basis in Cyprus but when I go to the US or UK I rarely see it and please don't tell me it is behind closed doors.

GG, Junemichael has posted several times on this site about the animal shelter in Limassol, to the best of my knowledge she has received little or no support or encouragement from Cypriot users of this forum. I believe that some Cypriots care for animals but the majority are either indifferent or simply cruel. I have seen it in other countries too, at a place I visited in France a beautiful but filthy English Setter is tied up outside a farmhouse on a long chain 365 days a year with no shelter in full view from the main road. This would not happen in the UK.

Cheshire Cat,
God only knows how much it cost! What a stupid way of doing things and such a waste of money. If the government here gave just 10% of the cost incurred in that futile exercise then it would have helped the animal shelters enormously.

Could you tell me how many stray dogs or cats are there in Cyprus?
50? 100? 1000? 10000? 100000?
You guys are great for sitting behind your computers and critizing others. One person posts something bad about an animal and you all jump in blaming the whole Cypriot nation. In the last 8 years I've lived in Paphos I have never once came upon animal cruelty witnessed personally. GG in the meantime sits at home in the USA and says what she would have done if she was here and how uncivilised we are. Well GG, what are you going to do about it???

What's it to you anyway? You don't live here anymore. It's my tax money and I don't have any objections. If you had some fallout with some real estate developer and don't think much of the Cypriots, why do you still hang around this forum?

You must have your eyes and ears closed!

Cyprus is awash with dogs that live in tin huts on remote fields with little to eat or drink. They are encouraged to breed and the unwanted puppies are just dumped as Niki described.

Most of these dogs are ‘hunting dogs’ which spend most of the year in these cages without exercise. When November finally arrives and they turn out to be gun shy they are just dumped in the countryside and left to starve to death.

I’m not saying every Cypriot is cruel but the vast majority have no care for animals at all – I can’t believe you live here and cannot see that? :?
