Been British and not been renowned as a multi lingual nation.I am very impressed by the standard of written English from our non British friends.
Why do you think we are so lazy when it comes to learning languages,please don't reply with everybody speaks English..

I have Turkish lessons every week - and I think that its an "age" thing (with me at anyrate) I am REALLY struggling at times :oops: But, I am trying!!! And I really admire the posters who have English as their second language and it makes me ashamed that I am not truly bi-lingual like they are.....

Honestly now?
Its TV.

Growing up I used to watch Bugs Bunny and other classic cartoons not dubbed like they show them today and also too young to read subtitles.
My mom still tells the story of when I used to call her at work from my grandmas house to ask what "wabbit" means.
The proof is some countries like France or Germany where although considered more "civilised" than Cyprus, theres a bigger percentage of people who DONT speak English.
Thats because all their shows are dubbed in their language.
(the french probably did it to annoy american tourists)

Also, Cyprus heavily relies on tourism and speaking English is a necessary trait.

We are almost forced to learn English.

Try these too:

Ohio gozaimasu = good morning
Hagigemaste = Pleased to meet you
Monda nai = No problem
moshi moshi = hello when answering telephone only
Onegaishimasu = please may or if you please or if you don't mind. depends when used
Watashiwa Mixalis desu = My name is Mixalis
Honto = Really ?
Arigato = thanks
A better way to say it is Arigato Gozaimasu=thank you

And even better Domo Arigato Gozaimasu=thank you very much

Well thats enough for now

Good luck with it

Probably because it is an easy and practical language with a nice sound that can be learnt by foreigners to almost perfection, bar the pronunciation. Long, difficult words can be shortened at wil for aesthetic reasons too.
