A question about Greek or/ Cypriot names.

Postby Kristianikos » Wed Feb 20, 2008 1:51 am

I have seen quite a few names which have Χατζη infront of them eg. Στέλιος Χατζηιωάννου and Μιχάλης Χατζηγιάννης.

A friend of mine said it may have something to do with the father being a priest, but i thought the surname had 'papa' if they were a priest.

My first idea when i saw it was HADJ, the arabic pilgrimage, but this could be coincidence..

Could anyone shed any light on this ?

Thanks, Chris.

A pilgrimage to the holy lands (Jerusalem etc) earns you this "title".
